Having worked in IT support for varies firms. I am now thinking of becoming self employed providing support to home users and small businesses. Anyone involved in the same game got any advice on the kind of kit I am going to need, hardware/software?

If you've worked in IT firms then you should know yourself what you'll need. It depends what you're getting into. The kit you should really build yourself from over the years in what you've used.
I have a usb stick with a lot of patches free software anti virus/firewall etc on it and diagnostic tools. A few live cds and a boot cd.
Hardware wise it'd be good to have a laptop(wireless usb network and cd access), extra cables, a spare working pc or 2 that you can slot in parts to a computer that needs to be tested. Screwdrivers (magnetic) socket converter and perhaps if you really want, an internet usb stick for when you're out and about.
