Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Basically Eircom's DNS servers got hacked last week.
Last night then someone launched a DoS attack on them bringing them down.
Basically just use the openDNS ip addresses for your xbox/ps3 etc. Net works fine them.
Eircom really need to lock these down.

There seems to be a lot of confusion between a hacker and a cracker on this thread.

hacker: A person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary.

Cracker: a person who circumvents or breaks security measures for malicious intent.

    Its eircoms fault!

I highly doubt it's being caused by hacking. It's DNS server acting up and they can't quite figure it out so they need to save face.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,397 ✭✭✭✭Ghost Train

I blame eircom, they obviously left themselves and customers open to this attack. Should have updated the servers the use... and it was obvious the minute it started happening what was going on, saying it was due to increased traffic on the network is a joke

Eircom are overpriced and have slow internet speeds, I'm glad

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,661 ✭✭✭General Zod

I highly doubt it's being caused by hacking. It's DNS server acting up and they can't quite figure it out so they need to save face.

    It's a combination of both.

DNS is basically a long list that converts the names you type into the address bar into the IP address of the server that you want to contact.

alot of DNS servers have an automated process in place where Server Hosting companies submit new website address and it's IP address (or when sites change hosting or IP address to existing servers) and that propigates across other DNS servers so that people can find a route to your website if their ISP's DNS server doesn't have that record yet.

Eircom is being targeted because they didn't secure their DNS servers properly against being sent requests to change IP addresses of prominent Websites (i.e. two weeks ago when RTE.ie was displaying a french maid photo) and when other sites were redirecting to nuseek.com search engine)

Now they are probably just being bruteforced with these requests and the DNS servers (and the Eircom technicians) are unable to cope.

As have been mentioned, you should change the DNS settings on your Eircom router to use those suggested by www.opendns.com

Burn on Eircom, they certainly wont like that

Whats that app? WEP is totally insecure anyway you need basic WPA with long passphrase at a min.

Don't know what it's name is or where it came from.
I was buckled on Saturday night at a mates house and he gave it to me.
I was kind of surprised it works tbh.. Guess it's a technicians tool or something.

Can anyone explain (in simple terms) what DNS is and why switching to openDNS is such a good idea?

I'm sold on it, but will have to convince my da cos i live at home and he owns the comp and pays the bills.

    Edit: thank you generalzod

It's just one setting you change in your local area connection/wireless network connection properties.

Your da won't notice you've done it, unless he regularly checks ipconfig/all.

In simple terms, computers talk to each other with numbers (IP numbers) not names like hotmail.com. When you put hotmail.com in your browser your computer needs number for hotmail.com computer. DNS server provide you with the number. So when try for google.ie your computer looks up its DNS server number and checks with server for the google.ie number and then off it goes. No DNS server, no name to number translation, no way to communicate with other systems via domain names.

    Hope that makes sense.

Yeah my brother told me about these Chinese hackers DDoSing Eircom but I thought he was making it up. He works in broadband tech support or something and said eircom have been covering this up for ages, blaming the weather and stuff but the Chinese have been hacking eircom for months at least

It's a pain in the hole though, half the time websites work and other times it takes ten minutes for them to tell me they're broken..

Its rather a small and simple thing that if fecked up can wreck your head. It simply looks up the name you type and returns the IP address so you can connect to it. For example if I type http://89.234.66.107 into my browser I will get boards.ie as that's it's IP address. However instead of memorising tonnes of IP addresses I can simply remember the name "boards.ie" when I type that into my browser it connects to my name server and asks it for the Ip address of "boards.ie" it then connects to the IP address.
However if someone hacks the DNS they can change the IP associated with say "boards.ie" and point you to a completely different site. Opendns is handy because it's very secure, is free and you will rarely ever notice any difference once set up.

it can be changed on the Eircom Router admin page.

Open a command window (start-> run -> cmd)

    type in ipconfig

your IP details for your router will be displayed. it shoudl be something like 192.168.x.x (usually 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1)

Open a browser, and go to 192.168.x.254 (where x is the third set up numbers in yoru IP address).

This should open the router configuration page.

    Go to expert mode.

(I'm winging it here, I don't have access to an eircom router where I can get the right names)

There should be a connection option. in that you can set the DNS Primary and secondary address (208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220)

There is filtering on these servers, but it's generally open.

interesting info here folks, thanks for that.

I'm furious with those eircom pricks, if they spent more time on their security instead of worrying about illegal file sharing:mad:

Well I will be in touch with them to demand a cut in my bill to represent the drop in service, and then I will leave them anyway, this is the last straw.

    dickheads.

Why are routers even supplied with WEP security these days?

It's like painting a lock on an open door... it might discourage the occasional peakaboo, but anybody who looks anyway hard will just laugh and waltz right in.

It couldn't be more obsolete if it had mullet hair, a DeLorean and wore pastel shirts.

The one based on a Jimi Hendrix song? I think that's been changed recently. WPA seems to be the default config too, for recent customers. Anything but WEP is a move in the right direction.

Is it possible to have an actual password rather than a big long key?

So instead of 123587390847jdfngd92 or something you could have "house" or something that is English

Normal dictionary words are among the easiest to break. Even simple variations on a dictionary word will also be easily tested for. You want a lengthy phrase, heading up towards 20 characters or more. Use character substitution, 0 instead of o etc, put words inside other words and so on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,398 ✭✭✭Dartz

Don't make it so hard that you can't remember it though....

Alphanumeric, with a rememberable mix of caps and lowercase is enough.

So long as it's not 'Password1'

The easiest way is just to go to 192.168.1.254 if you are using one of eircom's netopia routers.

    Then follow the above.
People, please do not link to any sites giving details on how to crack the eircom ssid thinger.
