you do the maths ! your paying quite a bit for free texts ?

That 2c is at most. Most people manage to send about 4 or 5 texts for a cent. Seeing as a message costs 11c or 13c from vodafone you can save quite a bit of money especially if you text a lot.

hey look at it this way 2.12 million vodafone customers in ireland :) 50 phones a week free right? So 2600 a year. So 0.0013% of the customers get something good .

That's providing someone doesn't win twice which is a possibility all be it a very slim chance.

ok cushion thats fair enough for people who can do that but you do have to think about EVERYBODY here... like people who cant be on boards cos they dont have computers at all... they cant have free texts !

people who keep old phones cos they cant afford new ones... im sure they would love to have a free phone.

people who send very large texts... surely on cabbage the larger the text the more its gonna cost to send the data.

people who have laptops in front of them but still use their phones to text because they just dont want to use vodafone.ie !

there are loads of different factors you do have to think of.. dont just be thinking of what you want or what "you" can do ... there are loads of old people who use vodafone too who again might have phones from the 90's !

old people dont want to download java to their phone try to figure out how it works and not sure if their text was actually sent or not ! sometimes the text confirmations can be good but cant have them on cabbage

cabbage.... ive never heard of it before and if you never heard of it before you dont know weather to trust it or not !

    the list goes on people.

I think you are going to have to try harder than this, Cabbage desktop is the cure for these folks.

Yeah, right, "old people" are big texters, and they love getting new phones free, once every 800 years or so when your turn comes up in the raffle.

But the chances of winning a new phone are really low. I'm sure more people would benefit from more web texts than would benefit from a new phone.

that chances of you alone of winning a phone is low and it is like the lotto but with vodafone 50 people WILL win every week and im sure there will be a rule that they cant enter again !

cabbage desktop would be untrusted by users who have just heard of it they might not trust it !

again less than half of vodafone users actually use webtext at all !

thats also the same with o2 and meteor and 3 for that matter !

Not really no. It's 2c per kb so you'd have to send over 1000 characters before it would cost more

It tells you how many messages you have left and only does that if it succeeded. It's not a delivery report but the system is reliable and I've never seen texts fail to send from the vodafone site. There used to be an issue on O2 but they fixed it and they also have delivery reports now too

    people

Well I made it so now you know me. Hi :)

You can see my thread on it here

I've been collecting some anonymous statistics on it for the past two weeks to see how much it's being used and since the 22nd of July over 30,000 texts have been sent through the server. It seems lots of people trust it but if you're worried I can give you a copy of the scripts along with instructions to set up your own server and nothing will be sent through mine. The server is configurable :)

Hi, but to be fair 30,000 texts isint much since earlier its being said theirs over 2 million vodafone customers in ireland alone. also the majority of the public dont know how to make a hotmail account never mind their own program !

its about the public not IT specialists or software consultants making programs just so they can send a text...

a lot of people are superstitious about their details e.g phone number etc.

the amount of texts sent in Ireland in one day is well over 30,000

With cabbage desktop it communicates directly with the network site by default. There's an option to send via the server but it can be turned off. You can use a network capture program called wireshark to verify that the communication is directly to the network site and nothing is sent to me. The anonymous statistics I was talking about don't actually include most desktop users because they'd have the send via server option turned off so I have no way of knowing how much they're using it :)

I think it's a lot for two weeks tbh. It's only spread through word of mouth. I don't advertise or anything

I'm not sure what you mean by make your own program. Do you mean what I said about giving you scripts? What I meant was you'd just be signing up to a website and copying the scripts onto it. You wouldn't have to do any programming and anyone using it can verify for themselves that nothing is sent to me once they change the server address. You can even download the code and look for yourself. It's available on the website :)

Less than half is still over a million people. Also I've installed stuff for my friends and while they may not have heard of the software I'm installing they trust me so they trust the software.

30,000? Cabbage is a lot more popular than I thought.

Do you work for Vodafone for any chance? You seem awful hyper for the FREE phones!;)

    Question for you Robbie 998

As you have stated 50 people WILL win a phone a week.

Judging from this thread (and the current votes on missionred) more than 50 people WILL use free international webtexts weekly.

So surely the webtexts are pleasing much more people than something like 0.012% of Vodafones customers?

Thanks in advance for your reply

i dont work for vodafone...other wise id get a free phone and free credit and i wouldnt need to be here

millions of texts are sent everyday !

lets not forget people that there is still a limit that only 160 characters per text ! that isint much at all.....

again going back to my earlier points that its a recession and people are poor and people are not buying computers anymore and/or internet !

again back to earlier points ... going into work and i want to send a text from my computer i have to wait to go home, yes i can use cabbage but will be charged even if it is a small charge people still dont want to pay it full stop.... you have no credit on your phone and you cant use cabbage on the phone... again screwed !!! there are a lot of flaws on this

But people use cabbage instead of normal texts so it saves you money.

Another benefit of Cabbage. You can type texts as long as you want and the program breaks them into numbered 160 character chunks, ie each text end with something like (2/3), and the recipients gets them separately. O2 allows up to 1000 characters in a single text so there's no need to break it up with them

If you want to send a text and you have no credit you'd be screwed whether you used cabbage or not surely? Or do you mean someone not using it would be signed up to the free text package?

And you can top up by text with AIB and BOI and I think vodafone offer their own text top up service so you can get credit anywhere any time. They also have their IOU service where you text a number and they top you up by 2 euro and when you get around to topping up they take it off you. So you're not screwed :)

You say using cabbage has a charge that people don't want to pay but not having free texts allows you to have, say, a package with cheap calls so this small charge allows you to save a lot more elsewhere

yeah they do IOU etc. but lets not forget vodafone do free texts to any network for life also so there would be no need for cabbage or internet text anyway

Don't you have to spend over €20 a month for that though. Not everyone spends more than €20 a month. And those texts wouldn't be international.

I think you missed my edit there. If you have the free any network texts your calls are more expensive. You can instead sign up to a cheap call package and only pay 2c for your texts up to a maximum 99c per day because the internet is capped at that. You can also enter settings into your phone (which I can explain how to do, it's simple enough) that make it cost only a tiny fraction of a cent because they have a different setup that's 19c per mb

So you can pay very little for your calls and fractions of a cent for each text so it's all good :)

And where it comes in especially handy is when you're abroad and these free texts don't apply anymore. It's about 2c per text anywhere in the world

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,611 ✭✭✭✭Sam Vimes

For example, I think vodafone do an offer of free calls and texts just to vodafone numbers so you can call vodafone people for free, send normal texts to them and spend a fraction of a cent on texts to others. A good all round offer :)

yes but these are people that use the internet for absolutely everything !

these are people who order items online like furniture, clothing and online delivery ! so they will use these but back to the real world where people call their local chinese... they go to the furniture shop and to a shopping centre for clothing and they are the people who are not interested in downloading scripts to their phone or using online texts... all they want is a to hit the reply button from their inbox and send away.. they dont wont to go to their applications folder that they might not even have or their phone might not even support.

all they want is simple easy call and text for free and they do get it but yes they do need €20 euro a month.. i didnt like that when i heard it too. but the amount of people who do it is unreal ... theres loads of them.

    going back to Sam here

a network wont up the price of calls just because they give free texts... they wouldnt work like that and again vodafone have their other plan for free calls and texts for the same €20 a month and again loads of people will do it. ok they are restricted to vodafone network only but again the majority of irish are on Vodafone. so they get free texts no matter what way you look at it and they dont need apps , internet or anything

My girlfriend's one of them, she's not bothered with the program but lots of people are

Ah but as I said above, that package coupled with cabbage means they're no longer restricted to vodafone numbers for texts ;) They're getting free vodafone calls in exchange for about a euro a month spent on data charges for cabbage texts to other networks. A good exchange imo

So your answer is what then?

The mode employed has nothing got to do with it, look at the fact that free phones are 2nd atm. More and more people use the internet.

Really what you are saying is the needs of the few outweigh the needs of the many (well more people)?

Yeah and you still have ignored the facts and not an opinion that more people will benefit from the free texts daily, weekly, monthly and yearly FACT.

Internet has nothing to do with it bla bla bla
