Sony Vaio no sound

Have a sony vaio laptop. Tried to play music (that is saved in the hard drive) through windows media player. It looks like it's playing but there's no sound. Then tried to play something in youtube and the same, no sound coming from speakers (or headphones) Checked volume control and that's fine (before anyone asks). What might be wrong? Could the speakers be dodgy? Bear in mind that the headphones output isn't working either. Thanks.

EDIT: Doh! Problem solved. Mods delete this at your leisure.
