Does this package contain the 64bit version, or do you use the product key and download it from microsoft?

To the best of my knowledge it contains both 32 and 64 bit versions.

I bought 2 copies from Amazon. I'll probably sell one and hopefully cover the cost of my total outlay.

Thats a great deal. Anyone know if MS are really strict on activation for W7?
Could I install it on my desktop and laptop without penalty?

Showing out of stock now, the offer runs until August 8th, so they'll probably restock before then.

It's €64.99 (with their exchange rate), and they won't ship it over here.

This was promotional deal until last Saturday in the US. Obviously different dates for UK.

Microsoft's program for preordering Windows 7 at a discount is proving quite popular, at least at Amazon.com.

The program, which kicked off on Friday, allows people to order an upgrade version of Windows 7 Home Premium for $49, more than half off its $119 suggested price, or Windows 7 Professional for $99, half of its suggested price.

Both options run only until July 11 and are also limited in terms of the number of copies Microsoft will sell at those prices, though the software maker won't clarify what the limits are. (Users will get their copy of the operating system after it is made broadly available on October 22.)

The two offers have proven exceptionally popular on Amazon. The Windows 7 Home Premium upgrade package vaulted to No. 1, not just in Amazon's software store, but among all electronics products on the site. Meanwhile, the Windows 7 Professional upgrade was No. 2 among software products. Amazon also has a lot of Windows 7 info on its site, as well as a paid delivery option that guarantees that the product will arrive on October 22.

I'm checking into how the preorder program is doing at other stores. It is also being offered at the brick-and-mortar and/or online outlets Best Buy, Costco, Newegg, Office Depot, Office Max, Sam's Club, Staples, Tiger Direct, Wal-Mart, as well as at a few regional spots, such as Fry's Electronics and Nebraska Furniture Mart.

Best Buy, for its part, said preorders of Windows 7 immediately took off on Friday--faster than with previous preorder programs. Overall, though, it said sales are in line with its projections.

Microsoft is also running similar programs in a few other countries. Reports from Engadget and elsewhere suggest that the program is already sold out in Japan. A Microsoft representative was not immediately able to confirm this.

Also kicking off this past weekend was a separate program in which those who buy certain PCs with Windows Vista can get a free (or nearly free) copy of Windows 7, once the new operating system is available.

if it's being released in late october, will we see it replacing vista as the pre-installed system on laptops straight away?

I'd say so, they'll want it in for the XMAS market.

If you buy a new system/laptop now you'll get a free or nearly free upgrade to Win 7 in October.

I've the Win 7 RC on a netbook and it runs just as fast as xp. Wouldnt dream of putting Vista on it.

sounds good, I have my birthday very close to crimbo, so may well be getting a laptop then
Wouldnt dream of putting Vista on it.

that's why I've held back on buying one

If you pre-order on Amazon does the money come off your card straight away?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,601 ✭✭✭Kotek Besar

    I ordered three. Keep 1, sell 2.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 885 ✭✭✭kendragon

Wouldn't let me pre-order it. Gave some weird message about it no longer being available from that seller even though I'm using amazon's own button.

Ah well.. I doubt its the last pre-order offer we'll see for it. From what I hear Microsoft is going to have to push this hard to make up for the disaster that vista was.

EDIT: Well that explains it.. people are ordering it in bulk

This offer seems to apply only for the upgrade version.

Anyone got an idea if this will later work on a new build system without the needs to install first a xp or search for my old XP CD?

If Its like Vista then it wont.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 811 ✭✭✭dave13

it will. Its the special EU E edition so its a full install. Upgrade version is not available.

I don't think it's the upgrade version - doesn't say it is anyway. I would hope it's the full version!

Showing out of stock on Amazon and Ebuyer.

Staples, Comet, PC World and Play.com still have it available.

Hopefully amazon will make more available. It says 'Windows 7 Pre-Order offer starts at 00:00 BST on 15 July 2009 and ends at 23:59 BST on 9 August.' underneath so the demand must have been extreme. They may supplement a quota per day.

Ah, but free UK delivery though. I'm getting mine from Amazon delivered free to someone in the UK, and have them forward it on.

Are you aware that play rip you off with their version of the exchange rate.

how much do we reckon we could sell these for on ebay when it comes out?
    £70? £80?

btw, professional out of stock now too

If it pops up again- could someone please PM me- I'm going to need to get two copies, and £50 is a good price point. If it were more expensive- I guess Ubuntu would be my next port of call.........

I reckon that wouldn't be discussed as something like that would be against the ethos of bargain alerts.

The E version has geographic restrictions associated with it- aka you may not be able to activate it in the US etc. This limits its appeal to the EU market. Also- despite it being an upgrade version- it insists on wiping your hard-drive when installing (check it out)- which will limit its appeal to anyone other than a techie. Any home user buying a PC from now on gets a free upgrade voucher anyhow.

The resale market on this may not be what you're imagining.......

they do ship to Eire, but only accept bank transfer as payment, seems a bit dodgy

On offer in the EU is the FULL version of Windows 7, not an upgrade but this full version does not include the web browser Internet Explorer.

My understanding is that we are getting a better deal for once on this side of the pond. What should be on offer is a full standalone version of Win7, due in part to the EU requirement that the Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser be no longer bundled with the operating system.

Some caveats as per smccarrick's post above. Link to the Windows 7E FAQ.

I agree, we are getting a better deal. I think I've also read that the "E" edition in the EU is to come only as a "full" retail version (no "upgrade" versions).

Not having IE preinstalled is perfectly fine with me. Better in fact.
