Was guestimated as 8.2 earier when I looked at this page but is now rating it at 7.8, and the NZ news seem to be calling it only 6.8:

Still was the first quake I've ever felt although it was just slightly shakey in Queenstown for about 30 seconds and only people who were sat down in the bar even noticed it. Was enough to slightly freak out the Korean couple sat in the bar though and then the duty manager who I think is from Brazil came in looking a little pale.

My friend swears he felt it in Wellington but we were at the cinema seeing Harry Potter so I think it was just some transformers next door!

Apparently if it had been in the Wellington region it would have killed thousands as buildings would have collapsed.
