Acquiring Network Address

We have a laptop that takes forever to get internet each morning. It can connect to the Local Network easy peasy, but then it hangs on getting a new Network Address for the Web.

Im just wondering is there an easy fix here? Is there a way I can assign the PC a permanent Network Address so it doesnt have to request a new control number everytime it tries to connect?

    XP by the way.

Eh? Your laptop gets a lan ip from Your router, this same ip should get You out. Explain Your situation further, this doesn't make sense unless your public ip is resolving on your laptop

The Laptop is connecting to a wireless router using WPA TKIP pass.

It connects to the network but wont find the internet for up to 10 minutes most mornings. Possibly longer. Im not the end user. Just the most qualified geek in the office. Has a strong signal. Might be 30ft from the router at worst, with nothing but air between laptop and router.

    OK, more info needed,
Whats ip address does it get from the wifi router? Open command prompt in accessories and "ipconfig /all", You'll see it under wireless
Whats the ip of the router? Should be your gateway in ipconfig details
What make wifi router? Is the wifi router connected to another router/modem? Can You login to the router on the gateway above from ipconfig?

    gyah busy.

Exact words are he has to manual connect to the network every morning. Its set for Automatic. It has the password. We set it back to WPA with TKIP, and he is set to connect even if the network is not broadcasting. I figure the next thing to try is lift the security and just switch to MAC filtering.

The working pc has a static ip.

Is the wifi router plugged into a modem/router? Is there another router that could have the ip ending .245? What happens when You try logging into 192.168.1.254?

  • Registered Users Posts: 82,773 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

There is a Netopia Router in the Central office which must connect off to the Cable Modem Somewhere. Possibly occupying the 245 cyberspace. You'd have Modem-->Netopia (probably wireless B, disabled broadcast)-->Cat5 to Linksys B/G

254 brings you to the linksys wireless G router we're hooked up to. Not sure about anything to do with the Netopia.

Could the problem be that the Linksys is acting as a Gateway, when it really is not? And under XP, how do I assign the laptop a static IP? Because that would certainly explain the morning wood lag, if its requesting a new IP all the ****ing time.

but like I said, we have 4 other Desktops working just fine.

Edit: Posted but on a re-read this may not be the case

Whats got the .245 ip address You p[osted earlier?

To give a static ip to Your wireless card go to your Network Connections, right click on the wireless connection, select properties, then select the TCP/IP protocol and click properties. Fill in the static IP address 192.168.1.240 (make sure no other pc has it), subnet mask of 255.255.255.0, and the default gateway of 192.168.1.254. I've picked 240 here just to be random and outside the dhcp address pool which usually starts at 100

ill give that a shot next time he can lift his screensaver lock :o meanwhile heres the data from 2 other desktops

btw the linksys is the .245 address. and how did you read out that the laptop had a non-static IP? wheres that on the config readout

I would delete his existing saved wireless networks and start clean. Maybe his autoconnect is trying to access another network first. Make sure the one you want is the preferred network.

Also, are you using the windows wireless tool for connecting, or the wireless card's manufacturer? No harm seeing is there an updated driver for the card too.

  • Registered Users Posts: 82,773 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

its XPs wizard. Ill add drivers to the ToDo. The saved settings ive wiped a couple times with no luck.

And im telling ya, I connect to the setup page through .245, the Routers Setup Page reads the IP adress as .245

.254 opens the netopia router, further up the chain. You've got, presumably,

Still havent updated richlap's driver though or assigned a permanent IP. I'll try to have him let me on there after the Closing Bell  mans mad into his stocks.

There could be the problem, 2 routers in the same subnet, both routing. Post a screenie of the setup tab of the Linksys and similar on the Netopia (need to see dhcp settings on both). I suspect u got an ip conflict as lan and wan side ip's can't be in the same subnet on the Linksys, this info's on the first tab.

  • Registered Users Posts: 82,773 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

yes im being told the Netopia unit is actually the modem (?) buyt also has routing capabilities: its a switch, and has a wifi antenna. However they use the linksys for their hotspot.

    images attached.

Monkey-Wrenched it onto the internet, downloaded the new driver pack, and after a few hiccups, it seems to be connecting smoothly enough. but short breaths. id still like to be ready to hammer out problems on the LAN side of things if it starts acting the shyte again.

Linksys is an access point, not a router, change the gateway to 192.168.1.254, gateway is wrong

  • Registered Users Posts: 82,773 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

you mean change the default gateway IP on the linksys to .254?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭PogMoThoin

Yes, the Netopia is the route out, hence 192.168.1.254

You not see whats happening? the Linksys is trying to get out on 192.168.1.1 which gets it nowhere

  • Registered Users Posts: 82,773 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

    true.

all i know is the way it currently is, it seems to be working. dunnask me how :p itll be the next thing i do when something runs foul.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 13,874 ✭✭✭✭PogMoThoin

Think about it, the gateway (ie the way out to the net) has to be the Netopia, 192.168.1.1 doesn't exist. Leaving it blank would be better than a wrong address. Your laptop knows the gateway out is 192.168.1.254, it knows this from the dhcp lease it got from the Netopia, but the Linksys disagrees and tells it the gateway is 192.168.1.1

    /gets coat ;)

  • Registered Users Posts: 82,773 ✭✭✭✭Overheal

well its all working spiffy. thanks man. switched the gateway to 245 for good measure.

now my new problem is the utility on this altogether 3rd computer. WUSB54GC - USB wireless link. The utility shreds the clock cycles. its a 2.7ghz single core. always working. The damn thing juices up 40% of the machine. tried to do without it the other day and while the connection kept dropping using the XP wireless utilities, I at least got the processor back down to idle :)
