well, not really but the forum is a tad quiet at the moment and wondering where all the RL heads are when the season is on in both hemispheres :D

feel free to post off-topic and if you've been caught up in Big Brother instead of following your Footy then it's Ok to share with the group :p

Goddamn it, was thinking how funny it would be to see it included rather than Union, would sicken a fair number of people. :pac:

Ah what am I at, just tryin to sort my **** out for college. Also I might be tipping over for the Challenge Cup final for the craic. :)

yea it would be funny to go 'deep undercover' over on the Union forum and starting bitching about how League got chosen for the Olympics 'when it's not a real sport cos it aint got lineouts' :p

It would be even better if League supporters put more energy into making league more popular rather than hating Union.

o dear, looks like someone missed the point. I aint got a problem with Union, played/coached both codes and as long as the ball is oval I'm happy to support it.

Often hard to convert closed-minded people alas. Remember I got a barman to put on a SL match last season. Coupla ould boys came in and I heard them say "it's not half the game union is". Course tem minutes later with about 6 minutes to go they couldn't take their eyes off it.
Mate of mine hates all sport but caught a couple WC games last year and loved it. Hard to get people to follow through though.
What gets my goat is over in the Union forum when the crappy kicking game is compared to league, because there's so much possession needlessly kicked away in League apparently.

I've nothing against League, just the chip on it's shoulder about Union doesn't do it any favours.

    So, Limerick flame then?

so, moving on, seems as this is a sort of on-topic/off-topic thread and it's Friday, here's a question that's not quite kept me awake for some time ...

In League, when did scrums drift towards being generally uncontested? I know we always contested scrums in Oz back in the 60s/70s and occasionally in the NRL you'll see a team suddenly contest a scrum but what's the story in general? I don't catch much Super league stuff (but am about to watch the Saints game in the background on TV) but are scrums ever contested in SL?

In my perfect world there would be contested scrums and lineouts in RL :)

Think I read on Wikipedia that it was around the 70s sometime, falling attendences etc. so they made the scrum uncontested to speed things up. How true or otherwise that is I don't know.

Don't really want to see contested scrums/line-outs come back in tbh, really frustrating when ya get a tool of a ref in union who resets the scrums 6 times instead of just giving a free kick/penalty the 2nd time the scrum collapses.
And as for ****ing line-outs, they're another part of the game I don't like simply because the rules aren't enforced. Once in a while there'll be a penalty for not throwing the ball in straight, despite plenty of instances during the game of it being way more bent and being let go.

BBC saying Paul Rudd of Newcastle Falcon's is trialing with Bradford! Come can't be that bad for the Bulls these days to try and pull a sub par Union winger :p

Purely from memory I would guess it was more like the early '80's. The scrummaging had become an embarrasment for the game, binding had become non-existant and the front-rows were stood almost upright. Whilst not perfect the present system is infinitely better.

Line-outs?? they were one of the first things to go when the Northern Union was formed! They merely detract from the emphasis of playing open rugby by having to have tall, specialist jumpers and hookers who can throw the ball in, plus it slows the game down.
