M3/5 - real costs of ownership.

Despite my better judgment I'm considering purchasing an E92 M3 or, failing that, an E60 M5 in early 2010. I know there are a few current and/or past owners here and I'd like some info as to how they found dealing with the car post-purchase, in terms of the road tax, insurance (specialist insurer?), service, and fuel costs, and the service intervals.

I know neither car would be a cheap option by any means, but essentially what I'm asking is whether you found the car to be a financial millstone around your neck once you had purchased it.

    Thanks in advance.
