I've played a good bit of it in my brothers house and I wasn't enjoying it that much. It's technically impressive but there's so many annoying things about the game that I feel many reviewers gave the game a free pass on due to the hype factor. There's too much focus on the simulation aspect rather than not including some stuff as it detracts from the fun of the game.

I'll await a PC version. Only getting a Xbox One S anyway so I'd be better off playing it on the PS4.

I picked up an xbone to play it.
you can ignore all the simulation stuff if you like it doesnt seem to make a difference .

Well in ways it makes the controls janky and the lack of fast travel is baffling.

It's weird, it's just every game is a massive time investment because the game is constantly slowing you down getting to where you want to be. My brother who has a kid now in his own words said it was a waste of money as he can't have a quick game in the few minutes a week where he has time to play it :)

I don't hate it and would love to give it more time but would love a PC version to do it justice as I only have a base PS4 and One now. It just feels really restrictive compared to Breath of the Wild which embraces it's systems more. Every weird physics or enemy system feeds into that game and makes it fun whereas they feel a bit... compartmentalized in RDR2. It's like they were put in without thinking about how this will actually add to the game.

I feel the same. Bit too much "on rails" feeling stuff. Mainly simple stuff like being forced to walk whenever you get close to things or following another rider while holding A to alternate between being too fast or too slow :pac:. It's so engrossing when you've the time to put into it but I'm slow to pick it up in case I can only give it 5mins. Still love it though. So much attention to detail.

Feeling a bit daunted by RDR2 as well. I've been looking at games to play on PS4 and all the best reviewed ones seem to be open world stuff. I'm half way through Yakuza 0 on PC and just picked up Kawami on Playstation Plus so I've got about 12 months of gaming ahead of me at the rate I get through long games.

My other issue is I really like mouse and keyboard and the purposely vague RDR2 shooting mechanics really make you scream out for a mouse. I've no interest in playing any FPS on joypad either so that means a third of the library is out right away.

So got the Xbox One last night and spent most of the night playing Halo :)

Just the first game. First time playing the anniversary edition. When I saw it first I thought it didn't look great at all. Then I switched to the old graphics and had the rose tinted glasses slapped off my face. Where had all the textures gone! Bit of an eye opener the difference in the two versions. I guess retronauts is right saying the graphics that have aged the worst are always the generation before the current one.

Really liked how I could play the game after only a couple of GB download, really handy feature as the game hadn't fully downloaded by the time I called it a night.

Say what you will about Halo but the Masterchief collection is fantastic value for money, especially as a lot of the bugs are now fixed.

Played some Ninja Gaiden as well and unlike Halo this game still looks stunning, even more so in 1080p. There's some interesting graphical errors though, models show tearing between polygons now every so often. It's not very noticeable but interesting as I say it was in the original release but not noticeable at low resolution as the tearing is so fine.

I can only imagine how good this game looks in 4K. And it's still the best character action game ever made. Fight me.

The Master Chief Collection is even better value if you get it free on the Xbox Game Pass! It's definitely handy you can prioritize which games you want to download and can turn off downloading multiplayer too.

Been playing darkwing duck and gun.smoke.
Haven't finished either of them yet. Going to keep playing darkwing but might give up on gun.smoke, my thumb can't take it! I switched to the turbo controller but the swivel pad it has makes it so much more awkward to manoeuvre that it negated any benefit from the turbo fire...

    Woohoo!

And, full disclosure, I'm still sh1te at Street Fighter.

Seems the 2 player controls weren't auto saving on exit from Retroarch, they are now, once I corrected the directory address.

    Robotron also played, lovely...

Might be some sort of thing there, not recognising a direction and a button press simultaneously... I don't think it's a problem with the Minipac though, maybe I'm imagining it.

    Finished Halo: CE

It's aged quite a bit since I last played it. The AI isn't so hot anymore. Still a fun game.

The main issue with the game is how rushed it is. The Library is just a garbage level but there's also a lot of levels of just the same corridors repeated, like they got their level design assets from Ikea.

It's a shame as when the game is taking place in better designed levels its a lot of fun.

Moved to the Halo 2 remake. I remember this game looking like the most technically advanced game on the XBOX. It still is but it's also incredibly ugly compared to Ninja Gaiden or Panzer Dragoon Orta. The remaster makes the game look a lot better.

The opening stages are actually pretty good. Well designed set pieces and good level design.

Then I played the first arbiter level. The Ikea level design is back and then the flood just appear for absolutely no reason. It's kind of rubbish and I remember the game having a lot of these boring levels after the initial opening.

I made the mistake of approaching Resident Evil 0 in a similar fashion to Resident Evil 4 as I haven't played one of the more traditional tank style games in years.

Yeah I'm now stuck about 3 hours in with absolutely zero ammo, zero health and rooms full of zombies around me. Feck!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,885 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

So I tried Panzer Dragoon Orta on the Xbox One and the move to 1080p is transformative.

The game still looks gorgeous but you just notice so much more detail. The first boss fight for example with the aircraft carrier, I never noticed that there were crew members running around on it while you fought it due to the lower resolution.

I didn't realise the Xbox One upscaled old games? That's a really interesting angle on backwards compatibility.

Yeah it does and it's not upscaling, it runs them in higher resolution so it's not a cheap post processing filter. The X will up res to 4K as well. Stuff like Ninja Gaiden and Orta look glorious.

Playing Parappa the Rapper remake. The tunes are catchy and it looks great. Pity they didn't tweak the gameplay a bit though the symbols in level 4 don't seem to correspond to the desired timing at all.

I'd love to play Gitaroo Man again. Maybe I can emulate it.

After the fun of revisiting Katamari Damacy last night, I went and bought Reroll on the Switch when everyone went home!
    It's fecking fantastic!
Nice crisp update to the original, well worth the €19.99 the EU eShop is charging Switch owners, I presume other formats are similar prices.

Quake 1, 2 and 3.. on my Android phone.

    Quake1-Android.jpg
    (sorry about the volume bar..)

I've been using Delta Touch (Google Play Store) for the last few months, with a wireless mouse and keyboard (Android 8.1.0), for all things related to the Doom 1 engine.

I see Quad Touch (Google Play Store) is out of closed Beta now, with a price attached. This is by the same developer as Delta Touch. external Mouse control isn't quite there yet, but all flavour of Quake run on my phone, smooth as butter and pin sharp.

Just dump your Pak files into the matching Quake 1, 2 or 3 folders and away you go.. mods, conversions, online multiplayer all work too. Any official expansion packs also, including Quake III Team Arena, there's rumours it may work with the Star Trek Quake 3 engine games too, haven't read up enough on that.

    Currently priced at €2.09.

The idea of Quake 2 and 3, particularly, on a phone, is so perverse. I got sucked into Quake 3 again after running it on a Pi, on the living room TV..

I wonder would that all work with a Chromecast, cast the games to the main TV?
Or would the lag make them unplayable?

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,293 ✭✭✭DaveyDave

Isn't Chromecast fairly limited with what it casts?

Could get an MHL HDMI adaptor if they're still supported. Back in the Galaxy S3 days they were used with a USB hub to have the phone via HDMI with mouse, keyboard and 360 controller for awesome emulator goodness!

I feel like people don't emulate as much these days but it's pretty cool what you can do with phones if you really want to. I got the official DualShock 4 mount which was great for PS1 games on an 8 hour flight :)

It does but the lag is quite bad and can be choppy. I can adjust to lag fairly well but touchscreen controls for a TV is tricky.

In most cases with chromecast your phone is just telling the chromecast what to play. The phone itself doesn't play the video.

Just finished episode 3 of Dusk which came out last week. Phenomenal game if you like 90's FPS. It's got the whole red, yellow and blue key sophisticated level design but it's not confusing in the least because everything is so distinctive you don't get lost. Game of 2018 for me.

Super Mario Odyssey....hands down the best game I've played in a long time, probably tops BotW for me (and that's saying something). The gameplay is amazing, level design amazing, graphics & sound amazing, pick up and play factor is what I love. It's what Nintendo do so well, and why they're the best at it. Coming near the end of the game now (started it a few days ago), and will definitely miss it.

Fantastic game alright. Got bored of BotW quickly enough but Odyssey held my attention all the way til the end. Well, think I got to 600 or so moons, that was 'end' enough for me. :)

Must go back to the Switch, haven't turned it on in ages.

So since I got rare replay for the Xbox One I gave Perfect Dark Zero a go to see how it holds up.

    It doesn't.

I played the first level and it's jank city. The resolution seems really low with no AA so everything is blocky and it just looks kind of terrible. Everything else about the game is just so mediocre.

Don't think I ever had any love for the game to begin with!

It has that awful 2004-2007 look where people went bananas with pixel shaders and specular highlights so everything looks like it's smeared in a coating of baby oil.

The first stage also takes place underwater which I'm guessing was meant to look impressive but just looks like budget Bioshock.

"Finished" Super Mario Odyssey...well, there's now the Mushroom Kingdom and by all accounts two dark worlds left. I dunno, the game is incredibly good (best game I've played in many years), but what remains seems like a pure collectathon. I was never a fan of sidequests or anything like that, is it worth spending hours now collecting enough stars to progress on?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,633 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

The original Perfect Dark wasn't too bad at the time, trying to expand on Goldeneye but without the goodwill of the 007 franchise to carry it along.
I still played the single player campaign to the end.

Perfect Dark Zero had nothing going for it.
I picked it up on release, along with my 360 and it was dreadful.
At a time when the PS2/Xbox/GC were hosting amazing games, pushing the hardware to the limits, PD0 just felt bad to play, and the Rare Replay edition does nothing to fix the issues.

It was a problem I found anyway with a lot of the games on the Replay compilation, they had a chance to bring some modern cop-on to the bonkers control systems on these old titles and didn't bother, Jet Force Gemini is a good example. It's another game I played to the end but is just awful to play now with that control system ruining it.

edit: apparently they patched JFG's controls... must go and see if it's an improvement!

I went ahead and collected everything and had a blast doing so.

You're missing out on a lot of the game if you don't as it opens up new areas and really starts challenging the player.

However I did find it got a bit of a chore towards the end. For every really ingenious or challenging star there was one or two that were there just to make up the numbers.

The mushroom kingdom is a great world to explore and well worth doing. The moon levels, well it's mostly picture puzzles which are fun, and a boss rush, which can be infuriating.
