Breath of Fire was translated decently by Squaresoft. It's a bit dry but the problems very much lie in the gameplay which is very bland.

By stepping it up for the sequel, if you mean they tried to make a worse translation then you are right. BoF3 was handled in-house by Capcom Japan to hilarious results. If you want to go fishing with a 'Fishing Lod' then it's the game for you. It's regarded by some as the worst translated RPG ever.

BoF2 however is a far more interesting game than BoF1 and it's the one to play really. A decent fan transaltion was released for it a couple of weeks ago which is work checking out even if they added their own intro to the game just to show off.

Yes, I did mean that when I used 'stepping it up', that's exactly what I meant. :p
I got my Breaths mixed up.
I knew the 2nd one was regarded as the better of the two but for some reason I misremembered which was poorly translated.
Didn't enix translate the first and capcom were dissatisfied with it or where trying to save cash and that's why it was in-house for the second?

Have gone back to Mother 3 after a 6 month Hiatus and whilst its so charming and pretty, I'm still just waiting for it to really kick off and , I'm only at the start of Chapter 3 (I have a low attention threshold:D). I know how high people's opinions of the game are but does the story kick off? Soon? at all?

It's kind of a weird one. Chapter 3 sets up the invasion of the island and lays the foundations for the rise of technology (the reason for those duff parts with the monkey). Chapter 4 is where things really start, and Chapter 7 is probably the bulk of it of the gameplay. 8 chaps in all

Squaresoft did the translation of the first one. I'm guessing Capcom wanted to save money with the second one.

I had a pretty terrifying experience playing Earthbound the other night.

Was cycling my bike along, minding my business, when all of a sudden the screen goes blurry. 'wtf is wrong with the game?!'

I then noticed it wasn't the screen, it was my eyes. There was something big and black right in front of my face obscuring the television.

Very confused, I moved my head back to see what it was - I nearly died. A giant spider was after descending all the way down from the ceiling and stopping right in front of my face. Two inch long legs. Think a facehugger from Aliens.

I yelped and tried to leap off the couch but at the same time scooch around the spider who was blocking my path at face height.

It was not a pretty sight :D

Some of them are simply too big to be allowed to live. Those outdoor garden spiders are effing huge & often make their way into your abode. I know they're harmless an all, and I try to escort them out into the garden where possible.

Well I certainly questioned my 'no killing' policy when that huge bastard of a yolk was dangling in front of my face!

Then I had this image of me swatting him, only to create momentum which would see him swing away, only to swing back into my face :D

    Yeah if your going to kill you have to decide to do it on sight there & then. Any attempts to move them inevitably means they scurry away under something never to be seen again {and crawl under your bedcovers during the night}

Read an article the other day about how swarms of cockroaches have been known to make their nests in the comforting warmth of a game console

That would be a nice thing to come across while attempting a resolder!

Crisis Force on the Nes. Im actually shocked at how good it is considering the system its on. Way better than gradius and Life force.
Cant wait to play it later wlth a controller.
Wonder is it expensive to get?

I recall a chap on Racketboy wrote about trying to unjam a disc-tray on a used, phat PS2, and when they finally managed it, they found not only a considerable amount of 'roaches, but also enough earwax-esque guck to put'em off lighting a candle for life.

This may play a significant part in why I'm still playing PS2 games on my launch PS3, even though it sounds like it's wincing whenever I try load anything more complex than my profile.

Well, I had look on eBay and it's only relatively expensive, around $60 or so, before postage and cart only.

Gone are my days of spending $60 on a cart only, actually I never spent that much on a cart ever. Any 'rare' game I got cart only was always under €50 but that has gotten next t impossible to do now! Terranigma for under €50 not a hope.

Was playing it again last night but only on my phone and with touchscreen controls its very difficult and I couldn't find my cheap ass usb controller.
Seriously tempted to go the whole hog and spend circa €80 on a boxed copy and then getting an AV Famicom.
Bit of commission coming up soon and I was going to get the girlfriend a iPad mini or 3 for her birthday, she 'needs one' for college, as all the others are using them for their design work.
But this game has put a fly in the ointment. I never loved a game so much straight away before, well since I was a kid anyway.
Definitely prefer going up the screen shooting games as opposed to them ones that fly across the screen from left to right while they shoot lots of things.
I wonder if there is an easier way to say that?

    Two questions:
Why always, or predominately, left to right with games?
Also are the best shooters or most well regarded horizontal or vertical?

It probably focus tested better and felt more natural. The only games I know that scrolled the other way were atari 2600 games but only because it was easier to get the hardware to scroll that way.
    OwaynOTT wrote: »

Ask most modern shmup fan and they will tell you vertical because they are all mostly bullet hell fanboys. In reality it depends on the game and both offer different experiences.

You do see right to left scrolling levels in a good few games. Off the top of my head, the alternate Mammoth path in Metal Slug 3.

The Tunnel level in Demon front scrolls like this too.

It just doesn't feel natural at all though.

    Vertical vs horizontal?
So many great games are in each,
RType, Gradius, G Darius, Salamander, Progear
    or
Dodonpachi, Ibara , Under Defeat, Espgaluda, Aerofighters

    So many great games!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,920 ✭✭✭TechnoFreek

Myself and the brother playing some two player DoDonPachi on the cab via Mame. Screen wasn't tated but awesome none the less.

I was surprised how responsive the game was through Mame with not intrusive slowdown

So many games still to play.
Downloaded dodonpachi for the iPod touch the other day after seein all the recommendations here. Great fun. Would be a lot better with a controller I'd say too.

Just playing Resident Evil Director's Cut. The Dual Shock version. The background music is completely different. I don't think it's an improvement but its still interesting to hear.

For the first time in a long while, I've got a bit of backlog. Strange though, I don't seem to want to play anything other than Mario Kart: Double Dash. I completed it yonks ago, but forgot all about the mirror mode, which seems to be concocted solely with the intent to taunt you on how evilly coded the AI can be. I cannot tell you the number of times I've been maintaining first into the last stretch of a course, only to get decked with an array of shells once the finish-line comes into spitting distance, and ending the race like a battered plum. It's so comical I can't even get annoyed, even though I've near broken my thumb trying to fart out enough green shells and bananas to halt whatever's set to level me.

Still, can I put the game down?

Played some Strikers + today, via MVS, very good.
Also realise I need to get the updated unibios rom, the version I have is giving me problems with the 111 in 1 MVS cart.

I'd love to get a unibios for mine, but the damn thing isn't socketed. You can still do it, but you'd need 1337 soldering skills.

Not sure if the added unibios options are worth it to be honest. It's Japanese so I get all the gore and wobbly bits :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,920 ✭✭✭TechnoFreek

    Unibios?

    Please explain!

What would it offer me and what do I need to check on my board?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 34,653 CMod ✭✭✭✭CiDeRmAn

Unibios, it allows you to select region, arcade or aes, and a host of other tweaks with your MVS or AES system.
It's not expensive, €26 shipped, and can be pretty useful.
Also, it is easier to install if your MVS board has a socketed bios chip, you just pop one out and pop the other in.
If you have a bios chip that's soldered in, then you're looking at employing someone with mean soldering skills.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 52,036 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Unibios means you get blood in Metal Slug :)

The blood in metal slug has nothing to do with the unibios :p

You can change that in the dip switch settings. Blood is off by default. So if the battery on your MVS board is dead, you'll have to turn the blood on every time you play the game.

If the battery is live, it will save your dip switch settings.

Which MVS version do you have? Look at the chips and see if any of them are in sockets. If they are then you probably have the one which can just be popped out and then the unibios stuck in.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,726 ✭✭✭The Last Bandit

I'll usually have a sticker with unibios written on it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,920 ✭✭✭TechnoFreek

I have an 1fzs I think. The compact enough type.

Is there much for me to gain with Unibios? I only have the 161 in 1 cart and probably wont get many more really apart from the odd one.

Had a look through that list. Really can't see anything there that would compel me to fork out money on a bios.

However I do seem to have a weird disorder whereby if something can be modded I have to mod it. Regardless of effort or value.

My son is currently enjoying the pleasures of Spelunky on the 360, and seeming quite proficient at it!
I was having a go of Alice: Madness Returns and have been pleasantly surprised, lovely art design overlaying a standard GoW style 3rd person brawler, the art making it for me, having read and loved the Lewis Carroll books in the last few years.
The Retro portion is the original PC game that's included as a free download but, oddly, only accessible from the in game menu.
I erroneously stated elsewhere that this is not available as a stand alone but it is, both on PSN and XBLA.
It is based on the Quake 3 engine and boy, is it dated now!
Especially compared to the new one, but then there is 11 years between them.
The art style of the older game isn't all that impressive, even for the time, 2000.
Rayman 2 was out before that, in '99, on the N64, PC and Dreamcast and looks a lot better, even now.
But, given Alice and the original PC game are only 11.99 in Gamestop, and the prequel is 9.99 on the online stores, it's not a bad deal, just be aware that a preowned copy may have a used code!

Yep! Tab will bring up options in MAME and let you play with dip switches on boards.

Metal Slug blood is in the MVS soft dip settings. I think it's on the second page of settings.

Once the Hyperspin i wired up I'm not going to have an easy option of removing it and popping a board in, so that's why I might be selling it on.
The Unibios is Kerb's so he can sell that himself!

The G-Net board is awkward as I got that for my 40th last year, might have to invest in another Supergun for it!
