Ha ha I think its a great game.:D

It always starts off slow but when it gets going pots can get huge even people who dont gamble normally start throwing 50's on the table.

    True that.....

    What's in between?

It's a card game, sometimes known as 'Between the Sheets' - each player is dealt 2 cards, face up, and can then place a bet (normally pot limit) as to whether the next card they're dealt will be 'in between' the two they already have.

For example you could be dealt a 3 and a J, and you're betting anything up to the value of the pot that your next card will be 4,5,6,7,8,9 or 10.

An ace can be treated as 1 or 14, (high or low) but must be called as soon as it's dealt.

There's also an option for 'hitting the post' - Taking the example above, if you bet say, 20 euro, and your next card is a 3 or a J ('hitting the post'), you add 40 euro to the pot. This option is seldom used in my circles though.

As Robbie said above, it's a game that 20 cent antes can easily lead to 100 euro pots.

Unfortunately, my worst ever gambling loss has happened over the last week. I deposited €500 to an online a/c back in September and had the run of my life, doing so well that I was €38k up by last Tuesday (27th Dec). Was having a good day on Wednesday until I had €500 on a horse that was beat on the line at 8s. Went into crazy mode after that and before I knew it I was down about €7k for the day. Of course the fact that I was still €31k up didn't enter my mind, all I could think about was getting my €7k back.

Fast forward a week and countless ridiculous chase bets later and I'm now only €8k up! Sick beyond belief at the moment and I can't understand how I was stupid enough to lose over €30k in a week, more than my annual salary!. Finding it hard to put it out of my mind and move on as I can't help thinking about all I could have done with the money.

I think you should withdraw that buddy!

I have already withdrawn it Oscars, I hope it didn't come across in my post that I was turning my nose up at €8k as I know it is a lot of money. I'm just sick to think that I lost the other €31k!

Look at it this way luke,it could be worse, and think of it as 8k gained rather than 30 lost. Lesson learnt

Got a tip from a good sources for Rose Hip one day at Leopardstown.

I was going travelling next week and decided to throw 200 e/w on him at 20/1

Decided to watch the race. Looked at the screen……He's 8/1 !!!!!!

Came nowhere and lesson learnt !

Calling it 30k lost would eat at you whenever you closed your eyes to sleep.

Thinking of it as 8k made can make you happy and relieved you learnt your lesson.

How did you get €500 to €38k? :O

You're just lying to yourself :D

Most I ever lost was €150 on a horse at cheltenham, can't remember exactly which horse but I remember following it up with a €300 on the next race cos I was pissed and it won!

Never lost a massive amount as I never put loads of money on anything overly risky!

Sure he only lost the bookies money.................

I tend to agree, if someone starts off with €500 and has €30K odd in the account after a few months and loses the lot they have no doubt lost €30Kodd but it's still money that was won.

One of the best things to do as a gambler/punter is to have a gambling bank and use that and that alone for gambling, if you buy into that theory 100% than it's quite hard to actually consider your gambling bank as actual money with which to spend etc :)

Now, if you buy into the gambling bank theory one should also buy into the staking plan theory ;) :pac:

Lumped on City to win the match today on Wednesday night, thought both Toure's were playing at the time. Lost €200 in all:( Only for Kompany getting sent off I think they still would have won, even at 1-0 down.

We used to call it "Bank link" as some poor sod was always having to go to the bank link at some stage. Heard stories of epic pots from 50c-1e antees going into the several hundreds of euro and being played till sunrise.
Dealt a guy aces once, he went high low and called pot, 70e at the time and I dealt him the case ace....sic sic game

Lost around €250 over 3 hours in the bookies one day last year. Still a horrible experience and although I could afford it, it still hurts.

Only now truly re-evaluating my gambling.

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,624 ✭✭✭votecounts

Lost about 850 in the bookies today already, ah well.
2 More races at dundalk tonight could see that grow.
Its only money and now back to work.

€1000 on a 1/12 yoke. Absolutely stupid bet for an €83 profit when i think of it now. Got it back though 3 or 4 weeks later thanks to a footy accum.

Lesson: Don't bet on reality TV shows :)
