Footwear for the Races - compromise on style for comfort?

Hi ladies, dressing up for the races this year and want some advice:

Generally is it a better idea to wear fashionable heels [bad idea in my mind!] or go for flats? What kind of flat shoes would be fasionable? I am quite short so kinda need the heels as I've stumpy legs, but at the same time, I don't want to be complaining about my shoes and being careful walking 10 minutes after arriving!!!

And if anyone has any advice regarding dresses for an early 20's size 16/18 I'd be very grateful :)

Would you think about a wedge heel? It would be more like walking on flats, but will give you a bit of height if that's what you are looking for, as opposed to the discomfort of spindly heels!

Best of both worlds...bring flats in your bag?!

I ended up getting a pair similar to these in New Look, without the sling back

They're not too higih considering what I normally wear going out so hopefully they'll be okay. I was only gonna bring a small bag but I may bring a bigger one.... thinkin i'll wear black tights though as I don't like my legs much........hmmm.........
