    Hi John,

I sent you an email last night but thought I might catch you here also.

Not sure if you remember me, I bought a surround sound system off ye in the new Year which you very kindly delivered to me in Bettystown. Unfortunately last night my two yr old cracked the screen of my LCD and I'm now in the market for a new one. (I assume its not worth or can't be repaired). It was a 32'' Philips HD ready but I am now wondering about getting a bigger screen (up to 42'') and full HD. My set up is as follows: SKY+ (hope to upgrade to HD eventually), PS3 for gaming and Blu-ray/DVD. I also have the Denon AVR1909 and Kef speakers I got off ye in the New Year - lovely piece of kit.

    My main questions are:

Is there a 42'' either LCD or Plasma that will give a decent Standard definition picture from my SKY box at a viewing distance of 3.5M or should I opt for a smaller screen based on that viewing distance? I would like to get the full benefit of my Blu-Ray film collection without compromising the standard definition TV picture.

If the answer is yes to the above is there anything you can reccommend for a max budget of €1000

Is it wise to get a TV that will play the Irish digital format (MPEG-2 OR MPEG-4?) when it comes out?

LCD or Plasma, what would you recommend?

I assume having a TV with a freeview tuner is not necessary when you have SKY?

Do you know anywhere in Ireland or UK that sells screen protectors for TV's?

I would also be looking to get the TV delivered. I'm not in a mad rush. I'd be happy to wait a couple of weeks to get the right TV. Any more then that though and I think the portable CRT set will drive me mad!!!smile_regular.gif

I'd be much obliged for any advice.

    Regards

    Chemical,

Ok there are a few option - but 1st the significant question - Plasma or LCD - I personally am still a Plasma fan however Plasma availability is getting patchy (Pioneer :( damn you!) and LCD's are getting much better so it really depends on the individual model you chose imo.

Here are a few options for around the €1k and under range (and you know we have never given you a bum steer yet!):

    Option 1.
LG 42PQ6000 - HD ready 42" Plasma - looks really great on SD and has 600HZ thingy for smooth on screen movement. see details here: http://www.lge.com/uk/tv-audio-video/televisions/LG-plasma-tv-42PQ6000.jsp
We can do this at £569.95 / €679.99

    Option 2.
    Sammy LE40B650 - 40" LCD Full HD
This is a shiner on Full HD and not bad on SD either - it looks smooth as well but the Audio quality is not as good as Option 3 - but then you have your AV kit to make up for that?? see details here: http://www.richersounds.com/product/lcd-tv/samsung/le40b650/sams-le40b650 We can do this model at just £759.95 / €919.99

    Option 3.
Philips 42PFL7404H - coming in very soon you can just about get this Full HD 100HZ LCD and it's a bit of a beaut - based on the stunning 8404 series it strips out the Ambilight and the NET TV features to sneak in under the magic €1K budget at €949.99 see details here: http://www.p4c.philips.com/files/4/42pfl7404h_12/42pfl7404h_12_pss_eng.pdf this set is a 100HZ with a 3Millisecond refresh rate so its great for sports and gaming - it's also the sexiest of the 3 (although the PQ6000 does look great as well) with a really slim bezel/surround and it sounds great as well.

Here is a link to an excellent site that sells Flat TV screen kits to prevent 2 year olds smashing screens http://tinyurl.com/ljlnlg or http://tinyurl.com/np7aox - we fiond that when placed at the correct angle the second option offers almost complete protection from frontal assault from a birthday party of 2 year olds and only marginally affects viewing pleasure...

    (Sorry, could not resist it!)

    Keep me posted!

    John,

Apologies for the change of tack and thanks for the previous quotes on 42'' sets but I am looking at this:

    PANASONIC TXP37X10
37" Plasma TV HD Ready Freeview £544.90

On the .com site. It says in store availability only. Is there any chance it will become available for delivery down here soon?

Or do you have any more 37'' plasmas as I have been swayed towards plasma now. After discussion 'it has been agreed' That 37'' is more appropriate for the room:rolleyes:

    John,

I'm an still undecided and won't really be able to commit until I see what the insurance on the old tv stumps up but the above TV (which looks great) is €832.99 on Komplett.ie

    my 2 cents

I remember i had to wait for 2 months for my Panasonic PTAE700 projector delivery and approx 25 phone calls. OMG, cant forget that trauma
since than i am one and only RS fan, whenever i buy anything or will buyanything, will be from RS, no doubt, even if there is a price difference of 20 or 50, I will buy from RS and i am sure they are the best,
sorry komplett, you may be good but RS is the best,
    rgds

    Astra,

to be fair to Komplett they mainly specialise in IT kit and they do appear to be good at that - we specialise only in AV kit - but thanks a million for your very kind comments - they are much appreciated!
