Cameron says that if Lisbon hasn't come into force (i.e. in all member states), he will put it to a referendum in the UK and call for a no vote. It would make sense for him to do so. It would unite the party and put Labour in the embarrassing position of having to argue for more European integration in the face of a bitterly Eurosceptic public-opinion.

Oh please... This is a ridiculous posture by Cameron.

If he really believes that Lisbon is so bad, he should be saying that he will block it if in power and if not in power when ratified he will work to reverse it's provisions when he does get into power. What kind of leadership would it show for a government to hold a referendum asking for a no vote?! Has anyone heard Cameron actually talking about which parts of Lisbon he has an issue with? Heard him discussing how he will work to change those issues in the next treaty? Or is he just playing the British patriotism card? Just as many on the no-side here are playing the Irish nationalist card.

Everyone knows the reality of this. If Ireland votes no, Lisbon will be dead and any replacement treaty will be years away. Cameron will not hold a referendum. What would be the point? Suppose the UK voted yes? Then what? Would Cameron demand another vote in Ireland?

The no-debaters here are grasping at straws to pretend that we will not be isolated if Lisbon fails. If we vote yes Lisbon proceeds, if we vote no Lisbon dies. The other states that have not fully completed ratification are irrelevant. If we ratify they will too. If we don't they won't because there is no point, but Ireland will be the one that blocked it. Some of them may congratulate us, but it's a scary thought becoming a reluctant part of a Anglo-Czech Euro-skeptic axis.

There won't be a referendum in the UK, it's a lovely game of politics he's playing but it's got approximately no substance.

One of 2 things will happen:
    1. Ireland ratifies, Lisbon enters into force, no referendum in UK.
    2. Ireland doesn't ratify, Lisbon is dead, no referendum in UK.

theres an interesting article on BBC site today

    Cameron's Lisbon problem
If Ireland votes "Yes" almost immediately the Tories will face difficult questions. Their current position is that if they get into power they will hold a referendum if the treaty has not been ratified by all 27 EU members. If it has been ratified, all they have said so far - and rather cryptically - is that they would "not let matters rest".
