Hi, I recently went to Budapest for implants and bridge only to find they made a mess of the work and now refuse to reimburse me or advise of their insurers. The specialist in Ireland showed me the x rays of screws protruding form my bone and tells me it will cost 3 times as much to fix. That is if he can fix it wiithout destroying more bone!! Help. Any advice?

Get any records of correspondence between you and the dentist. Check any website / literature they have in regard to after care and problems. Then get a good solicitor with contacts in Budapest.

    Hi Mark
I have contacted a few solicitors in Budapest but they do not seem interested. The just say they do not deal with medical negligence. I have e mail correspondance regarding the problem. They say they will fix it but the work is so poor I cannot trust them.

Wow that is unfortunate all right!

I notice you are a new user and just signed up to boards today, and that all the posts you have made so far are all related to what a bad idea it is to get any dentistry work done abroad and what a disaster it turns into.

You wouldn't be an Irish dentist, or related to one by any chance, would you?

For my part, I have had some dentistry work done in another country (not by choice, just happened to be there at the time) and had no problems at all.

Just wanted to balance out your scaremongering ;) Please name the practice that you have had problems with in Budapest so we can avoid them - also I'd be interested to know who the specialist in Ireland you saw was and what the estimated cost of repair was...

    Hi,
What I have advised others is to ask about indemnity, that way they can feel more secure if they decide to go abroad.. If I can prevent others making the mistake I did I would be happy. I feel there is probably not much more I can do myself thats why I asked for advice. I trusted my dentist because they seemed so helpful. That unfortunately all changed when it went wrong.

The dentist who is correcting the work is in Belfast and the dentist in Budapest works in Vorosmarty in Budapest,
Hope that makes my post clear.

    ?:D
    and repeat like groundhog day

    @ Arciphel
Thats exactly what I thought. I have heard lots of good stories from Irish dental patients who have travelled to Eastern Europe. It till sounds a bit vague.

What exactly is your problem my friend? I NEVER suggested one should not go abroad. I advised anyone to check indemnity first. That way they can rule out the cowboys. I made the mistake of not doing so.

Which dental practice abroad are you connected with?

I asked for advice here. mark was decent enough to reply. If you have not sincere advice then please do not bother.

I've got no problem, and I'm not connected to any dentist, here or abroad.

If you're looking for advice you should post in the medical/health forum - this one is for consumer issues.

I'm sorry to hear what happened to you and hope it gets sorted. There are cowboys everywhere though, the same thing could have happened to you going to a dentist in this country. I guess I just have a healthy dose of scepticism when it comes to reading things like this online - nothing personal. ;)

Have you any idea of the stress I have been under? You were concerned about being clever. It is not even the money but until I can get this resolved and for the last two months I have been in pain and every bite I eat causes discomfort.

I joined this site initally to ask for help and found you instead.

You should probably ask in the dentistry forum, OP. There are a few dentists who post there and they may be able to offer some advice. As Hungary is an EU country you may be able to sue from Ireland?

Sorry to hear what you've been through.

I know a person who is sueing a local / Irish consultant for making a miss of his mouth with major dental work he had done.

So it is not just outside Ireland this can happen.

Maybe contact the Europenan Office of consumer rights. I think there is one in Dublin.

    Very true Splanc.
It's always a good idea to get personal recommendations for dentists - even if you're just looking for one in Ireland.

Would you get cheap cosmetic surgery in Hungary without knowing how good the surgeon is?

A work colleague is just back from Budapest and is delighted with the work they carried out there. She still needs more work done, and has already booked her flights. They even collected her from the airport and dispatched her at her hotel.

Thank you for the advice. As a newcomer to this site I appreciate it.
    Kind regards
