Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I know I just asked about Europe just out of interest though, for those of you who have ever or even about to go on a round the world adventure, how much would you resonably need? I really would appreciate your advice on this?

I spent somewhere between 15,000 and 20,000 on mine. From all the research I've done 15,000 seems to be the average. Lots of people do it differently. You could work somewhere along the way to make some money.
I volunteered for 6 of the 15 months I was travelling so spent very little money while I was doing that. I had a budget of 1000 a month, went over in places like Argentina and Australia and under in Bolivia, Peru etc. It's very hard to guess for another person though.
One thing is that I very rarely drank on my trip. My brother is doing one at the moment and drinking almost every night so he has no choice but to stop and work in Australia now (if he can get work - not looking to good there right now).
Also where you planning on going? My one month in Oz was my only expensive place. I didn't do North America, NZ or Europe.

I'dve thought 15,000 would be the minumum you would need if you weren't working. Anyone else's advice?

It really depends on where you are going and what you plan to do.

I spent 11,000 Euro in 6 months. That does not include flights or insurance or anything like that. It was just for activities, accom and socialising.

I went to Sout Africa,South East Asia,Australia,NZ and North America. 6 weeks in the USA killed me big time. Unlike Dory i drank a fair bit too.

This winter i might go to South America for 5 months - i'll only spent about 5,000 Euro then im thinking. Will be different to the trip i just did - not much boosing and not many activities. It all depends on where you plan to go and what you plan to do.

Im just back from a RTW trip (12 months) Went to Thailand, OZ (6 months) NZ, Fiji and South America. I didnt work for the entire year and spent €25k!

OZ will seriously eat up your holiday funds so unless your going work there I would not stay longer than 2 months.

I drank alot and did everything I wanted to do while away. If I hadnt spent so long in OZ I probably would have only spent 15-20k. Ultimately it depends on how you choose to enjoy yourself. I know folks who brought 10k came to OZ via South America and drank every last penny within a month or 2 of getting there, didnt get jobs and were on planes back to Ireland roughly 6/7 months into their trip. Youll only need about 5k for South America - I spent 3 months there.

I take it you were in South America recently? Therefore you have up to date costs?

Planning to spend 5 months in SA and get by on 1,000 a month? Is this possible? Depends on where you go really is it? Where did you go in SA and can you give me a rough idea of costs?

Yeah you should be able to get by on a 1000 a month in SA but leave your self a little reserve fund just in case! I came home in June I was in Chile, Peru, Columbia, Bolivia, Argentina and Brazil.

Dont spend too long in the expensive places (well expensive relative to the rest of SA). I found Rio to be so dear, it was my last stop before coming home, I was there for 6 days and spend 500 quid there alone id say. Argentina is good value for what you get but its up there with Chile as 2nd expensive. Peru and Columbia are quite cheap, and Bolivia is by far the cheapest place. I was only spending around 100 a week there if even!

Follow all the backpacker golden rules,

    1. Take the buses everywhere rather than flying even if the bus trip is 20 hours! Get used to that coz there will be plenty of them lol.

    2. Shop around when it comes to Hostels, there can be huge differences in price in the bigger cities. Stay in Dorms.

    3. Look for hostels with kitchen facilities, that way you can cook for yourself. Food is cheap to eat out generally, but the supermarkets are cheaper!

    4. If your booking activities, shop around again and if you can find other backpackers who want to do the same thing you can often get great deals when you go in to book as a group rather than as individuals.

Ill think of more and post them up when they come to mind

So, like if you balanced your time properly brtween rich & poor places you could do it on around 15?

Cheers!I just did a RTW trip so im pretty familiar with the rules! If you know of anymore applicable to SA then please do bang them up!
