Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Problem with Avensis

    Hi all,

Last friday I was cruising down the M4, suddenly start to lose power in my 99 Diesel Avensis and the service indicator light came on (yellow engine symbol). Pulled in to check in the manual to see what it was. Started again after 5/6 minutes and it was gone, car was grand and made it home. Thought it was just down to the fact that it needed a service ( it was well overdue). Serviced it and it was fine.

On my way back from Cork yesterday and same thing happened, lost power and yellow light came on. Pulled it and left it off for 10 minutes, turned it back on and has been fine since. Going to get it checked out but has this ever happened anyone before??

    Cheers to all.

Was the fault not mentioned (by you) and diagnosed and resolved at the service?

I thought it was but the same thing happened (loss of power and light coming on) after the service.

    You thought it was what?
Did the dealer not plug the car up to the PC and diagnose the fault after you asked them to? If not then my advice would be to go back and ask them to as it would largely be us guessing the fault from here.

That year of avensis does not have a service light, thats a engine fault light, Was the fuel filter replaced during the service, if so you may have a common rail problem, or a build up of dirty in the fuel tank thats blocking the pipe now and then.

Yeah you're right, just checked there. Yeah i do the servicing of it, Changed the filters myself. Best to take off filter and manually pump to see if that would lift it?

If the fuel filter has not been replaced, remove it and pour the fuel into a clear plastic bag and see if there is dirty or water in it. Other that that remove the back seat and take out the fuel gauge and have a good look into the tank for dirt or a sort of jelly substance.

99 Avensis isn't common rail, it's the same engine as the Carina E.

The carina e had the CT220 engine produced from oct 97 to july 00

The avensis commom rail 1CDFTV was produced from aug 99 to dec 02. Model no CDT220

And from sep 03 the 1CD FTV was in the avensis model no CDT250

In Europe Avensis used old 2.0TD 89bhp engine up mid2000 (basically the same as the earlier Carina D-Turbo), then used 109bhp D-4D engine from mid 00 till new model in early 03.

Carina was ran out here in 1997. First Avensis models appeared in the end of 97

point being, if the OP is driving a 99. it won't be a D-4D.

Avensis 2.0TD (97-00) were 1975cc, D-4D (00-03) are 1995cc. they are not the same unit.

AFAIK the 1CD-FTV engine only ran from 00-06

Maybe if Sunset V can tell us what engine he has ...Then we can try to help him out from there....:)
If its a d4d aswell as a fuel problem it could be also the egr valve sticking..... but then again it could maf sensor.
As above you need to get a code reader/diagnostic's check carried out
    and take it from there.

    It's 99, 2.0 Turbo diesel.

If its the 20Td then your limited to what you can get from dia equipment.
Is the mil light on all the time??
1,if so you can get a code reader plugged in and see what fault comes back with.
2,if the the mil light is not on all the time then you may need to plugin a diagnostic equip look at live data from different sensor and monitor whats happening.
As said above it could be fuel related....
