Wildfires sweep through southern Europe

Extreme weather across southern Europe has resulted in the deaths of late least eight people.

The victims died in fires raging in parts of France, Greece, Spain and the Italian island of Sardinia.

Thousands of firefighters have been dealing with the outbreaks.

Spain has been hardest hit, with at least seven big fires in the south and east.

Hundreds of homes had to be evacuated in the coastal town of Mojácar.

Tavaco, a town close to Ajaccio on the island of Corsica, has been heavily damaged by the fires.

All the forests in the area have burned down.

There have been no injuries but many houses have been destroyed and their inhabitants left homeless.

South Eastern Europe braced itself for soaring temperatures on July 24 and 25 as medical services reported that the first stages of heatwave had left some people fainting, while in Greece, emergency services were poised to deal with further wildfires.

Bulgaria was reported to be set for temperatures of more than 40 degrees C in some places. Local media urged people to keep hydrated and stay out of the sun at the peak of the day.

From Belgrade, local news agencies said that temperatures had climbed to 39 degrees in the Serbian capital on July 23, the year’s hottest day so far.

Emergency services had responded to more than 250 calls and had treated 40 people in the streets as they grew faint from the heat.

In Greece, which has been hit by a rash of wildfires, emergency services were on alert to deal with more blazes. The country’s meteorological service issued a warning that July 23 to 25 would see conditions favouring wildfires.

In Macedonia, the forecast was for 38 degrees on July 24, with temperatures in places likely to surpass 40 degrees.

From Bucharest, Romania’s hotnews.ro said that the meteorological service had issued a code yellow alert to 33 counties, Bulgarian news agency Focus reported on July 24.

Temperatures on July 24 would be higher than 35 degrees and on July 25 would be between 37 and 39 degrees, hotnews.ro said.
