Good lord I just heard on the RTE news that a two year old girl has been shot in the head by her four year old brother.
    Unbelievable!
Not sure if she's alive or dead.
    *edit*
After a quick web search, thankfully the girl is still alive but critical. It is unknown if her father will face charges as the gun was not as securely held as it should have been.

Remember guns don't kill toddlers, 4 year olds do. Keep saying it.

Two children of pre-school age have shot and wounded other youngsters in separate incidents in the US.

A three-year-old boy shot his four-year-old brother in Gray Court, South Carolina, with a .22-calibre handgun.
The injured child, who was airlifted to hospital with a gunshot wound to his stomach, has undergone surgery and is expected to recover.
The boys and their father had stayed overnight at a family friend's house when the younger brother woke up, found the gun under his bed and accidentally fired at his brother, Sheriff Ricky Chastain said.
He added: "Kids see things on TV, the toy guns, the three-year-old probably didn't know what he had as far as any intentions of hurting his brother.
"This is something the family will be dealing with for some time."
In the other incident, a two-year-old girl is in a critical condition in hospital after being shot by her four-year-old brother at their home in Las Vegas.
The children's father was at the house when the shooting happened, police said.
Officers are investigating how the boy managed to get hold of the 9mm handgun he fired at his sister.
Police spokesman Bill Cassell said: "While the brother was holding the weapon it discharged, striking his sister's torso."
He added: "At this time it appears the (boy) was able to gain access to the weapon because it was improperly secured."
The shootings came less than a week after a five-year-old boy shot and killed himself with a handgun in his father's vehicle outside a pharmacy in Las Vegas.
His father, 31-year-old Alex Kopystenski, has been charged with child endangerment.

I blame the parents, it's clearly their fault.

They should have given the girl a gun to defend herself with.

In this case, the Father, for not handling his firearm the way it should have been: far out of reach of children.

I think the difference is cars and kitchen knives have uses outside of seriously injuring people.

Nothing wrong with shooting people as long as the right people get shot. Also this week, in Louisiana, a ten-year-old at home alone with his younger sister grabbed a hold of a parent's loaded firearm. He shot at three men who had broken into the house, and had them cornered in a closet.
    Linky

Ever notice how those instances of firearms use doing good tend not to be brought up on Boards, and only ever people bring up the unfortunate instances before tut-tutting on the matter?

Four is a little young to be leaving loaded firearms around unattended, but that doesn't mean that firearms are always a bad thing to leave lying around. They tend to give you a fighting chance. Even if you're ten years old.

I would caveat that by saying "out of reach of children that age"
