Car for €15,000

Had my first car for a while now. Had the pink licence for a while, and the paycheque coming in for a while now too so time to upgrade in the next few months.

Looking for something a bit sporty, my budget's around €15,000. Looking for something different than the ubiquitous Golf that everyone at work seems to drive. As an indicator of my tastes... Mate's got a Hyundai Coupe which I quite like. The Volkswagen Scirocco is nice looking as well, but a bit outside my price range. I'd be looking for a 1.6 or above, no real preference over petrol or diesel. A coupe would suit me grand - no kids to be hopping in the back :D It'd be used for commuting to work during the week, and the odd trip down the country at weekends.

    Anyone any suggestions?

What about something like an Audi TT?

My suggestion is to divide your budget by 3. €15k on a car is too much unless you have a serious amount of diposable income

Some people like to spend their money on cars.
I don't think it's too much to spend at all.. If the OP is going to get as much enjoyment out of this next car as I would then I can see why he's spending the money.

Amazingly good fun to drive and you'd get it for around 15k with a bit of bargaining, only down side is the interior is pretty low-rent.

I used to love people who liked to spend their money on cars, because I made a lot of money off the back of them. Personally, I would only spend €15k on a car if I had €20k spare cash.
I came close to shaking people a couple of times before they signed finance documents to give them a bit of a reality check, but I couldn't afford to have a conscience and feed my family.
I had a young fella "chewing the paint off" a VW Golf once, repayments, insurance, tax, fuel, maintenanace and depreciation meant he can probably afford nothing else for the next 4 years. But he was an adult playing with money and he obviously thought it was worth it.
Each to their own but anybody in the trade who is being honest will tell you that cars are just a money pit.

That may be true but regardless of how much they cost.. If that's how people get their enjoyment then what's the matter?
Beats getting into debt through gambling anyway..

That's a fair point, but how much enjoyment can one really get out of a 1.6 litre Hyundai Coupe?;)

I'm all for having fun but it doesn't have to cost so much.
    A fellow luxo-barger/bangernomicist recently traded down from an LS400 to a Mazda MX-3 1.8 v6 at a net cost of €0.
I took the mazda for a burn down some country roads, goes like **** through a goose and handles like a kart.
Sometimes it is just about smiles per gallon :)

as an example the OP could buy my Itr for €5k and have €10k left over and have more fun than in a €15k car?

it'd be better than a hyundai coupe anyway :D

For me it would be an E46 320ci, no question.

Here's a nice one for nearly €17k, but I'm sure an offer of €15k cash would get it.

You probably will not get more bang for your bucks from this for under €15k:-

    Mazda 3 MPS:

Incredible deal I think, I rang about that one you linked to and you will get it for below 14k in my opinion. He wanted 9k with my 04 Fabia VRS which was a bit too much, if it had been nearer 6-7k I would have taken it.Im actually going to stop talking about that car now lol, it may still be a secret when I do get the cash:pac:

remember the cost of tax and insurance?

so you'd be better aiming for around €13,000, depending on your insurance premium

Integra DC5 type r .... although I may be a little biased. You will probably pick up a low milage 04 for that price.

From what the OP's told us, i'm struggling to see what would suit better than a Hyundai Coupe 1.6. There's hardly any point in the OP paying extra for performance they're unlikely to use?

If you can tolerate the comtempt of other motorists:
    http://www.driving.ie/usedcars/index.cfm?fuseaction=car&carID=200927194507639

But loads to choose from at your price:
    Ford Puma 1.7
    Toyota MR2
    Smart Roadster
    Fiat Coupe 20vt
    Mazda MX-5
    Mini Cooper
    Opel Speedster a.k.a. Vauxhall vx-220
    Honda Civic type-r

    or, my favourite, Covette Stingray

Maybe you should say: "I am X years old with Y years no-claims, what car should I not buy?"

Probably get this for close to your budget?

Some price alright but having sold mine after a year i can say you would get bored with its looks fairly quick. I really enjoyed it, especially its 'stealth' ability but its so plain and i always felt i had to tell people that it was 'actually a 2.3 with 260bhp...' if you know what i mean. Also the power delivery on anything but dry/smooth surfaces meant much of its 260bhp is limited on takeoff. Might not be a bad buy though as i reckon they have depreciated as much as possible. That 08 model would have been 38K new.
