Anyone know what the distileries do with old barrels that they have finished with? I know they have a certain shelf life but are they just thrown out or recycled in some way. Reason I ask is because I am on the lookout for one or two of them.

As far as I know there is limit to them number of time the barrel can be re-toasted. A number turn up in good garden centres for decorative use, you a good nursery.

Garden centres is the main destination for the last fwe years.

An average whiskey barrel can give about 30-40years of service.

I have 4 halfs in my garden as flower tubs (2 casks) wonderful smell of whiskey from them when I got them :D strangely they were all scotch barrels.

There's a fella near Derry gets them from Bushmills. Turns them into garden planters and tables etc and then sells them on for about £50.

Why do you want them? I guess it is for decoration. If you get them in garden centre type places the wood might be treated.

I have seen people wanting them to flavour drinks themselves though. Some of the homebrew and distillery suppliers have bags of toasted oak. Some do mini barrels to mature your own in.

Also if the wood is not treated you might want to.
