No it's nothing really to worry about.
Our vet just gave us some calcium supplements for him to ensure his bones where strong.
Maybe at your next vet appointment you could ask your vet and see what s/he says!

Your dog is only dreaming when it twitches like that, all dogs do it, mine is doing it right now in front of me as i type.

With regards supplements, be very careful what you give great danes as you dont want them to grow too fast as this can cause joint problems. Make sure shes not on too high a protein food too.

hi jenny, congrats an your puppy!! What about Honey or Belle for a name??? Where did you get her from? Did you get any registration papers with her?

On the food situation... Husse or Arden Grange are probably the best dry food you can feed your puppy... stay away from Giant Puppy foods or breed specific foods, these are not suitable regardless of what your vet/pet store day... buy adult husse or arden grange. And the ONLY suppliment that should be given is Vitamin C, get the chewable human vitC tablets from a chemist and start off with 250mg per day slowly working your way up to 1000mg over a period of a few months. You can also add a teaspoon of sunflower oil to one of meals everyday, its good for her coat and skin. Other than that, nothing else!!! As you pup is still quite young, you should feed her 3 to 4 small meals a day, slowly reducing this to 3 meals a day and then 2 meals a day over a period of months, never feed less than two meals a day. Also, never exercise your pup 2 hours before or after feeding her... this allows the stomach acid/food to settle/digest before/after exercise and helps reduce the risk of the dreaded bloat, which can cause your dog die if this happens! There is a book by Karina Le Mare simply called Great Danes... i recommend you get your hands on this and have a read... she has bred and owned great danes all her life and knows her stuff!!!

Just another tip, don't let her jump and do not bring her for walks until she is older... danes grow at such a rapid pace their bones are quite prone to injury if too much strain is put on them... having a play about in the garden is plenty of exercise for her for a few months!!!

Oh, you do know to keep her away from other dogs and the outside world until she gets all her shots from the vet?!?! She will not be covered from picking up any nasty bugs and virus's until a few days after her last set of shots!

If you have any other questions, just shout!!!!

    happy dane-ing and enjoy her!!!

congrats on your new puppy, she looks adorable!!!!
just to state whats already been said....always feed a food of 25% protien or lower and stay well clear of any pup foods (made for danes or not) no calcium either, its seriously bad for growing dane pups!
as kassie said, just sunflower oil and vit c and a good quality low protien food...less is more with danes:)
i`ve reared my pup at the min on husse lamb and rice (23%) and shes growing lovely and evenly which is exactly the way !!!
great choice of breed by the way...i`ve four danes at the min and could never be without one!! :D

Awwww, this thread is lovely!!! Sounds like you really can offer your pup a really great home Jenny, I really wish you well. I think Lady is a really good name, especially as you got the pup on the way home from Knock.

Best of luck with her; she's gorgeous:)

Ah I love a happy ending, so glad you got your wish:)

I have no experience with Great Danes but I do know that she is going to be one strong girl! I'd get her a good harness for when you start walking her. In the intrerim I would take her around the garden on the lead teaching her not to pull if not it'll be you being taken for walks when she gets bigger.

    Good luck!

Jenny get a "dogmatic" for when she's older www.dogmatic.org.uk/ (mods, hope i'm allowed post a web link?) they are the only thing for a dane in my book, my big male is very good on an ordinary collar, but the dogmatic gives me that extra bit of security knowing i have full control over him IF he decides to leg it after a rabbit or something! An ordinary collar and lead should do the finest for now while she is growing, plus it gives you the chance to teach her to lead walk correctly! Put a collar on her for about an hour a day (supervised!) so that she gets used to somethign around her neck. Then clip on her lead and let her play about so she gets used to the lead dangling out of teh collar. Next, bring her to your garden and just follow her around with the collar and lead on so she gets used to the whole sensation of a collar and lead... and if you can, try to attend some classes with her for obedience and socialisation... check to see if there are any "dog schools" or K9 clubs that you can attend, even if its just for socialising... you can't socialise her enough!!

hi there everyone, i am looking to get some advice on getting a great dane pup? i have done my research in relation to health issues, understand to get from a reputible breeder etc and know how large they can grow, but i still love them, the sound of their personalities and all i have read in these posts so far. you all have such high regard for these gorgeous animals and it is lovely to hear. ive come from always having dogs though none as big as the dane, and having boxers who drool also so thats not really a problem, but i have a gorgeous 2 year old baby boy. i want to get him used to dogs early so he will not be scared, as is he is fascinated by dogs and has no fear and id like to keep it that way. my 2 fav breeds are great dane and newfoundland, i have been looking at great danes on donedeal and have seen one i would really like but am just wondering in relation to my 2 year old how will they be together? i would really appreciate some advice from you all in relation to training while i have a young baby, and prices of dog foods/puppy foods etc. I have a tonne of space around my home and am a dog indoor person anyway and have a double bed all ready for the pup to make their own, so now it is just the important finer details and the real decision making i would like some opinions on. thanks for reading x
