1)I think pints taste horrible compared to bottles of beer (I know you can get bottles in the pub but for a fiver no thanks. 2) If your not a smoker and most of your mates are having to sit there while they go out every 10 Min's. 3) Walking back with your pint to your seat and spilling most of it on the way (After you've had a few)

Main reason for me is this whole 'Disco Bar' thing. Why does the music have to be at such a volume that you have to shout a conversation?

Oh dear god... I sound like a 70 year old man.
If people can't talk, they drink quicker.

Main reasons I don't go out in the local town these days:

    1. Sweet Child Of Mine
    2. Livin On A Prayer
    3. 500 Miles.

    EVERY night I'm out...

because I prefer camping with a bonfire, friends and a litre of whiskey. What can you do...

Only head to the pub rarely. I got used to it with the missus as she was not a big drinker, and I liked not-drinking related activities.

I still go to pubs, and I still like going to them. The craic can be good, and you have more of a chance of meeting people you haven't seen in a while. Any drink you can have at home loses out to a cool pint of Guinness for me too. Don't have the problem of monster TV's or blaring tunes in the couple of pubs I frequent at home, although Galway can be a different story (apart from Ti Coilis).

I was talking about this with friends last night,so outside of the price whats your 3 reasons why you dont go and pubs are dying

    1. i have to get all dolled up and wear uncomfotable heels

    2. i am the unlucky one who always gets the first/last pint of the barrel and its ****ing rotten

    3. I dont like bumping into people i used to babysit

    Television, television and television.

"Irish" pubs are horrendous places nowadays with tvs blaring soccer left, right, behind and in front of you - day in and day out. Facilitating the simple pleasure of having a decent quiet pint and a good chat with friends eludes the overwhelming majority of pub owners and managers. It is beyond their consciousness. The tradition, character and ambience that made many pubs genuinely artistic and community places which attracted the big characters of life are gone. They have been replaced by TV-centric pubs almost everywhere. There has been a barely remarked upon revolution in the past 10-15 years in the character of these "Irish" pubs.

And then they think they are really f ucking smart when they turn the tv and/or radio up in the hope that we drink more as we fiddle for something to do while we struggle to hear and be heard over their noise pollution. Bankruptcy couldn't happen soon enough for these publicans who have imposed these standards for far too long on their premises.

Publicans are trying to be all things to all men, but failing that they have no hesitation in settling on being all things to soccer supporters. I'd take my custom elsewhere if I could find an 'elsewhere', namely a TV-free pub. Gogarty's pub in Dublin, and that seems to be about it; and its novelty doesn't make it exactly the quietest pub in the country.

In the meantime, I will just have to settle on Café Moda in Rathmines and await a future minister resurrecting McDowell's continental-style café-bar licenses to add some choice in the market (http://archives.tcm.ie/businesspost/2005/05/08/story4677.asp). This time the publicans will not have the power to undermine it, and public choice.[/quote

I know the gravediggers pub doesnt have a tv. The owner refuses to get one for the bar or lounge. Everyone has great craic! Pints are savage too!

    Poker Face

    Bouncers

Television - Even on mute they are so bloody distracting. A lot of publicans seem to be on a television screen size penis shoot off. One gets a 42incher, so the next pub along get a 50incher and so on. Big massive TVs are a feckin' distraction.

Threat of violence. Not necessarily in the pub, if I go out I'll go to Mulligan's which is a safe as they come. But on the streets past dark you can definitely feel an aggressive vibe.

No choice. As other have said if you're going to charge €5+ for a pint offer some choice at least.

All the boozers in walking distance are crap/cess pits and I'm not all that picky. Thats the big one, I'm not having a gargle in a place I don't like.

The Guinness is in dublin crap by and large.

If you aren't going to drink crap guinness then there isn't a great selection of anything that isn't lager.

Excellent, White Feather. I was in The Gravediggers years ago and the old part is one of the best pubs I've ever been in. They even had Tayto Cheese and Onion and bikes stored inside the pub. It's time for a return!

So, now we have two pubs in Dublin without a TV:

    Grogan's (South William Street)

    The Gravediggers (Prospect Square/Glasnevin cemetery)

    Anybody know of any others?

    1. The effort and thought of having to dress up and wear heels puts me off going out at the weekend a lot of the time.

    2. Don't see the point of pubs with really loud music. How can you socialise if you cant even hear your friends.

    3. Having nowhere to sit also puts me off, I usually like to sit down and chat with friends when drinking. Not stand around being jostled or aimlessly wandering around.

It doesn't take a genius to realise how publicans can afford these 42 inch tv's.

    1. Hassle - staying at home and inviting people over or going to the homes of friends or family is an easier way to socialise.

    2. Not child-friendly. I'm with my son most of the time so I only go to child-friendly places.

    3. Pubs are too noisy. Music and TV make it difficult to hold a conversation.

Lots of friends don't go anymore or don't drink
Pubs smelly, overcrowded and full of arseholes
Hard to find a comfortable drinking emporium that isn't dire
    Loud music, bad music
    Screaming wans
    Smelly people
Guys who pester you and won't leave you alone
    Bad overpriced drink

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,803 ✭✭✭El Siglo

Because at home I'm guaranteed a seat, can smoke in comfort (if I choose to of course) and I don't have to wear shoes.

    By Day:
    1. Sky News on the wall
    2. Surly staff
    3. **** coffee
    4. Manky Toilets

    By Night:
    1. Huge, Crowded and Noisy -so few places you can go for a 'quiet' pint anymore.
    2. Even Mankier toilets
    3. Total and Complete absence of service of any form

  • Registered Users Posts: 32 DaveMaC

    Oh I forgot:

    1. No DartsBoard
    2. No pool Table
    3. No Jukebox

Jesus, im really living in the past aren't I!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,204 ✭✭✭Recon

    1 - crappy music
2 - usually way too loud, can't talk to people
3 - often more fun at home/at friend's place with a bunch of friends playing computer games or watching a DVD.

    +1 to pub games

Videopoker and slot machines too. Random card games with strangers and waitresses serving shots of whiskey every ten minutes. Smoking allowed. Even draughts and checkers I would like! Gambling in pubs is needed!

    1. Shít music at an ear piercing volume.
    2. Pints that go flat after roughly 5 seconds.
    3. The "toilet negro".
