"Rumour" has it that it was going to open as a elderly care home, I understand that has been canned.... they are now using the kitchen to process meat....

The rossnaree was a nice place , until the infamous parlamilitary double assasssination in the carpark.Hence the re-naming as the Europa hotel,if my memory serves me well!

Seemingly (rumour has it;)) they were (for many years) going to make it into a nice flash two story hotel with lots of accomodation... then citynorth came... then it was in for planning to become a care home - two stories..... then something changed with the grants for care homes??? so they would not have got it .... so they are just now sitting on it until property picks up/land prices rise and in the meantime are letting the kitchen be used .....

Pity it just looks so awful and with the new roundabout set up your eye is kind of 'drawn' to it :(

Used to be a great club night out there after Lucianos toned it down. We'd travel down most weeks to the Ross during the summer of '97. Not the best of spaces, but great atmosphere.

You'd think with the amount of new houses in the vicinity that it could have been made into a bar/restaurant type place, instead of everyone in all those surrounding estates needing to go to Drog or Bettys/Lay town for their socialising.

Forgot all about that INLA murder that time.

first I heard about the murder, oh my god.

Well the rossnaree's good name for customer service and "crazy party nights" (sic) was somewhat tarnished by the double murder in the discobar area so they hired a team of PR specialists who decided that "going forwards" the best way to remove the stigma of the "blood on the dancefloor" scenario (if you will) would be to rename the place after the most bombed hotel in the world! Boom!..and indeed.....Boom!!!

How many paramilitary shootings were there in the Drogheda area over the years? I know Dominic McGlinchey was shot dead in the phone box in Hardmans Gardens in 94/95. Were there any others?

They're the only two I know of. The one in hardmans garden was pretty shocking...

Someone put a match to the place last night...fire brigade caught it in time. Drove past it earlier...place is just an eyesore now...

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,563 ✭✭✭Fingers Mcginty

Didn't notice any damage when I passed it this morning. I agree it is an awful eyesore. Very bleak and depressing.

It was remamed Europa because its new Owner thought it would trigger the interest of Northern drivers who would associate it with the 5 star Belfast Hotel. it's a pity to see its decline...but I think the bar declined after a stupid revamp that killed its soul....sorry for the puns...not intended to offend....God be with the Fantasy Gardens/ Thee Place days and the Frankie Goes To Hollywood videos.....and the lads begging for a slow dance from the most cold hearted girls the world ever created....But the twist in the tail came when Drogheda's womens Karma began with the arrivial of the girls from Eastern Europe, and they stole half the blokes in town leaving the girls fightig for the remaining lads...funny how tables can turn:cool:
