Hi, a stray and ill looking kitten appeared in our back garden which we couldn't help but feed it and I think he/she has now adopted us :)
I've never owned a cat before and badly need advice on how to handle this, if we are to keep the cat I'd want to get it neutered, etc, I don’t even know if it’s male or female!! All advice is very welcome

your best course of actiohn is to bring it to the vet and have it sexed, wormed and vaccinated. the vet can guess at age too and book him/her in for neutering at the correct age.

well done on taking responsibility for the poor thing btw, i hope you have many happy years together :)

Weel done for taking on the little thing. The world needs more people like you.

The best advise would be from a vet but I am sure there are many experienced cat owners here who can help you.

One thing though... are you sure its a stray.... cats are very disloyal and will stay around where they ae being fed... sometimes leaving a distraught owner out looking for them. My aunt adopted what she thought was a stray, only to find out weeks later that the poor owner had being going out of her mind with worry.

Good luck with kitty and hoefully somebody here can give you good advice

Thanks for the advice, I'm pretty certain it's a stray or it had a very bad owner as it was in an awful state when it first appeared and it's only now starting to look healthy. Also it wouldn't come near us at first so didn't appear to be used to humans as such, but is allowing us to pet her now. Would a vet lend me a cat carrier, don't know if that's their thing, or do I need to buy one?

MJ3, I found this site a lot of help when I unexpectedly adopted a small kitten back in 2006. I knew nothing about cats so got some good cat health & general cat info here:

Sorry not true of ALL cats :)
Not true of all cats, but if they find someone who feeds them nice treats, they'll go there for a day or two, leaving their owners in a state of worry.

Well if they get fed enough at home they shouldnt have any need to go anywhere else!!

Am always very glad to see people like you to take in stray and caring for them.
If you can pet the kitten, then it is good because he is starting to socialise more with human contacts. If he is purring it will be even better, and you can try to hold him..

Here is a website that will give you lots and lots of adv.ices:
    http://cats.about.com/od/catcare/u/CatBasics.htm
Take the kitty to the vet for a full check, worming, shots etc... the vet will be able to tell you how old is kitty and when will be the best time to neuter/spay.
    Keep us post :D
