Just got my letter of introduction today. It took 13 weeks though from the time my application went to London, so it can take ages.

Good for you! You've given us renewed hope (I have my LOI since this week but my other half is still waiting, its been 16 weeks)

Went through customs today with my LOI and they didn't even check my proof of funds or did I have insurance. No bothers at all. Any1 know a cheap mobile phone to get? something that you just top like at home? also where is a good region in the city to go out? Thanks

Phone companies are pretty bad over there but you can buy a pay as you go phone. Just check which ones have the best rates and you're sorted.

    Re phones,

I think a pay as you go fido phone is the best for someone just arriving, not tied into a monthly plan with a whole load of minutes that you're never gonna use.
can easily drop it/sell it after a while if you need something better

    Hey All!

So after a few months of searching, I finally got the job i wanted as an I.T. Recruiter. So if anyone who is looking for positions in I.T., who are already here in Toronto or are on the way over check out this website http://www.fetchrecruiting.ca. They have already filled quite a few positions with Irish people who have come over on the visa, as they have been very impressed with the talent! Please take note though that the positions are mainly in the Computer Software industry.

Is there anyone who's going to Canada for the winter time to live and work in Whistler? I did that last year and loved it so if I get another visa through this IEC I'll be doing the exact same thing and going to Vancouver around October. Does anyone else have the same plan? I met a bunch of people last year who were all gonna go up but turned out only 2 went up.

i git my letter of introduction last friday after opting to do the medical. Im just wonderin has anyone else who got their loi after passing the medical looked at the email where it say "medical clearance:........". Mine is still blank and i was expecting it to say something like "granted" or "cleared". Its probably on the system for the border officials but if not id need to email someone and sort it out.

You can work for the mountain. They pay minimum wage but you get a free lift pass(normally between $1100 and $1600), and alot of people can get staff accomodation which is usually half the price of normal accom. Then you get discounts off the mountain restaurants and clothes shops. Though you could be working in the kitchen, checking peoples lift passes etc, there's alot of different jobs you can do.

Otherwise you can get a job with someone else, they'll have higher wages and you'll generally always know your hours. Though you'll have to find your own accomodation. Accom is expensive up there so you should try to get a good paying job or else a job with the mountain.

Myself, I got a job in a nightclub up there on the door, Buffalo Bills. Pay was good and the job was evenings to late mornings, which meant I could go up on the mountain snowboarding anytime I wanted to. Since it was good pay it also meant I could pick and choose where to stay since I could afford it, better than staying in a cramped staff accom sharing with people that might be total muppets.

For me it was perfect. The hours were always the same, you could board/ski any day you wanted, take a day off when you wanted etc. Having a job with the mountain is very handy, cuts alot of the costs out, but you're not always guarenteed staff accom, you could be waiting half the season to get it. I had alot more freedom that way.

Anyways I'll link you to the Whistler website and you can check it out. There's only a few weeks left in the season over there so you can still check there winter site. It's a savage place and if you like your summer activities it's even better as it's supposedly the best place in the world for summer stuff like mountain biking, hiking, fishing camping gold etc etc. Check it out.

    http://www.whistlerblackcomb.com/index.htm

By the way I went there on 8 Oct because the season usually starts around mid November or after, stayed a few weeks in Vancouver to check it out, made a few friends, then headed on up. So you've plenty of time if you're going there in September. Don't worry about jobs too much, might take a few weeks to get 1 but you'll get 1 alright. It's a resort so you can work in hotels, for the mountain, shops, supermarkets, restaurants etc. If you want to secure a job and accom though you should do it early, lots of people go up there to live for the winter.

Sorry if posting this question in the wrong thread I've just seen so many Canada related threads I didn't know which way to go!

Just wanted to ask if the visa programme for Canada is still open? Saw on USIT it's closed, didn't know if that meant it's over for 2011 or if there's somewhere else I could apply or get info on it? Thanks

I am going to Vancouver next week for 3 months. I am changing flights in Heathrow and Toronto Pearson Airports. I have a return flight booked for August, I also have proof of insurance, Letter of Introduction etc. Unfortunately I don't have a bank.statement as proof of funds because it will take a min. 5 working days for a long form bank statement to be posted to my house. I do have a statement that they printed in the branch signed and stamped by the bank manager. Will this suffice as proof of funds?? So stressed out that they might not accept it!

Also, will I have to get my visa at Toronto airport or at my final destination, Vancouver??

Thanks in advance for any advice and help!

    Hey!

I'm heading on the 8th of September to Toronto for a few hours wait for my flight to Edmonton where I hope to find a job. I've heard it's one of the best places for jobs at the moment so hope all goes well. I know Vancouver and Toronto are pretty much where everybody is heading, but does anybody know of anybody else heading to, or staying in less popular or more remote locations?
Hi there naked monkey:P my names Paddy and im headin to Banff rocky mountain resort round september time!thats not too far from edmonton. Was there for 9 weeks last year its some spot.

    Hey!

I missed out on the VISA for Canada, was planning on being over there about a month or two ago :o

But am going to reapply and hopefully get over by the end of this year (more than likely in December), but if I don't make it down the waiting list, then I'll be going as soon as possible in 2010, so probably around April I'd imagine (as you can't travel before).

Quick short question to those booking now and those already over there: After USIT expenses, flights, insurance etc., how much on average does the whole thing cost? Before accomodation and spending money?

    Thanks,

hi nick im headin over in a few months with migration expert they same thing as usit try them.it is gonna cost 1300euro for flights insurance and visa!:)

[EDIT] Asked a silly drawn out question about hostels. Short Version: Now much am I going to regret booking into a hostel with no air con in June?

Secondly what is the job situation like in Toronto at the moment? I've heard very conflicting reports ranging from prospects are good to give up and find another city. I'm work in Multimedia, have a MA and previously published titles but I'm not all that fussed about working in my field, I just want to enjoy my year in Canada so I'll do pretty much anything.

    Cheers!
