ask the immigration specialist who has her own thread in here (Canadian immigration advice)
I intend to do the same as you, but by different means. I think (and its not definite) that you can apply for the CEC once your second IEC runs out. The CEC process takes quite a while (Months, not weeks), so once your IEC runs out you are on implied status until a decision is readhed. Once your 6 weeks passes and you have 2 years work done, you can apply again with new documents showing youve got your two years. The whole idea is using the first application to buy time while you build up your two years before applying again.
I couldnt get a second IEC (18 month rule) and am currently in the middle of getting a visa through my gf, an international student. I am on implied status at the moment, and am doing the very same thing after it was suggested to me by my immigration lawyer. Supposedly a lot of the lawyers here do this as a way of working the system.

When you say "implied status" Did you get a letter or email stating that? I applied online to change from a worker (IEC) to a visitor so that i could stay in Canada while i wait for my 2nd visa, but havent recieved anything to say "Yes you can stay as a visitor" Any ideas?

For nothing - are you serious? I broke my thumb over new years and had to have surgery...my bills are already in the 10s of 1000's - thank f*ck for insurance...

You do realise you would not be covered for anything from a small fall, accident, hit by a car, trip to emergency...basically anything? its not like you can show up at emergency and they will treat you...well they will but it will cost you $550 a pop and upwards...

Point being...get insurance and dont be stupid...

(also 800 is a crazy price...got mine of getcover.ie for under 200 I think and they are excellent should you require them for emergency assistance)

youre entitled to OHIP if you've got a valid work permit for at least 6 months, and have a letter from your employer saying that you will be working for them for the duration of your permit

if youre only changing to a visitor, it comes with implied status

You would continue to get paid as normal. The revenue dont notify the employer to say the SIN has expired. It is the employers responsibility to make sure all their staff are legally allowed work for them. The employer is obliged to get a copy of your SIN card when you start because your SIN starts with the number 9. This means that the SIN # is only valid 12 months at a time - if the employer continues to pay you, well in good but the company may get into trouble at the end of the year when they sumbit the tax files for all employees, it's only then that the revenue and employer will notice you continued to work without a current visa.

If you are in Toronto, there is an immergration office at 25 st clair East subway station - its about 2-3 mins walk off young street entrance. I went in there twice when my visa was up. First lady said nothing she could do for me. The second day I went back, met a nicer lady. She scanned my passport. She could see I had applied for my second visa but hadnt got it yet and she gave me forms to fill and put me on implied status until I got my second visa. I nearly kissed her. If at first you dont succeed, try again!!

I got a new SIN just over a month later....problem solved!

Hey is there anybody who is or knows someone emigrating to Canada with 3rd level qualifiations pursuing a business career? I don't know much yet, but I'm getting the impression that Toronto is the capital of business, though I wouldn't put anything past Vancouver as a second option.

I noticed that the jobs abroad expo that happened in March 2012 in Dublin was 'the most successful event held in Dublin ever' and I've read you can walk away with a job offer at such an event. The next on is in October. I intend to line myself up for that then. Anyone know much about how this event works? The website is fairly sparce on details on the inner workings of the event, at least at this stage in advance of the next one.
