    need help!
departing in march for canada can i get visa through in time and what visa should i get !qualified carpenter with 10 years experience in states thanks

Are you in Ireland? Are you under 35? If yes to both you could get the under 35 visa. Although if you're bringing a family it might be a different story. Other than that, if you don't fall into that category then you'd be better off trying to get a job offer before you go and I think going the LMO route

If you are looking to move your family here permanently then look here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp
All options available to you will be found here, you could apply for the U35 visa if you qualify but because you seem to want to move here for good then check the link above, also be aware that applying for immigration status for a family is costly in both time and money and nothing is guaranteed.

Does anyone know if there is currently a waiting list for the under 35 visa? Also what other types of working visas are available?

i did the canadian work visa in august 2009, and yesterday while talking to an ontario immigration officer when sorting out my new work permit, i was told that theres NO need to go through usit or anyone else - the paperwork is available online once you know where to look, and is free of charge to fill out

you dont even need to do it in advance, you just hand the filled out paperwork to the guys at immigration at the airport and unless youre the dodgiest looking head theyve seen all day, youll get your work permit there and then

wouldve been nice to have known this in august last year, wouldve saved me a few bob haha

oh, and that whole "visa cant be extended thing?" is only technically true... its a student work visa, so you cant extend that. but its VERY easy to get a new work visa when it expires

Well did he mention where to look then?

On their own website it says either click link one (which says something new is happening in 2011 and has a heading on it saying United Kingdom) or click link 2 (Usit).

Have the 399 ready for the visa when the 2011 session opens and register on the mailing list wit usit and you will be informed a week before it opens that they are taking places for 2011.

And get your police certificate sorted out now.

    All info on here http://www.workincanada.ie/

Get your police cert organised in March or April. They are valid for 6 months. If you've spent time living abroad since you were 18 you will need a police cert for that country too.

    Hey,

Heading over to Vancouver late January, Hear its going to be wet! How are other people liking Vancouver?

Rent seems a crazy price, especially when you don't get a bed! Hows the cost of living other wise?

    Thanks

    Vince

Ive been here in Vancouver now for 2 months... wow... its hard to believe actaully, time is flying! I can say it took a bit of time to settle in and get a liking to life in Vancouver. I may be the first to say this but I had to let it grow on me! I didnt get that first love I got when I first saw Sydney! But Im loving it now and glad I choose here over Toronto. Although might venture there at some stage later in the year.
Got a great apartment after 2 weeks arriving, its located in the West End which I love and its so close to everything. Reasonable too at $950 a month, one bedroom includes electricity and phone. Internet extra. Best thing was it came fully furnished, didnt even have to buy a tea-towel!!
I spent my first 2 weeks in a hostel and spent so much money during that time. Id advise anyone to start your accomodation search straight away. I did the tourist thing which I regret because theres plenty of time for that :) Craigslist is the way to go and by walking around the area you would like to rent, many available suites/apartments have signs outside the blocks. I see alot popping up down here around in the West End, which also has one of the cheapest supermarkets in the city, No Frills. Its awesome!
I opened up a bank account with TD Canada, so far no problems with them. Very helpful.
That Rogers sim card that USIT give for cell phones as part of their package, throw it away! It will cost you a fortune.
Jobs wise... I was offered a job after 4 weeks here, at one of the ski resorts, i went to a job fair and was lucky to be offered a position. Not very highly paid but I get a ski pass and it will be fun, Im here for the experience as long as Im making money to travel and experience Canadian life for the year Im happy. I was also offered a job this week at the Christmas Market, so cant complain. Ill have a busy month but plenty of cash after hopefully :)
Craigslist again is good for jobs, also websites like
    http://vancouver.kijiji.ca/
    www.jobbank.gc.ca
    www.Workopolis.com
    www.hcareers.ca/
Hardest part is getting your foot in the door ... take anything at the start to stop you spending all your savings.
I miss driving but the public transport is super.
Havn't been out socialising too much yet, but now when Im working I wont feel as guilty spending my dollars. So Ill check out the pubs ect.
Its getting really cold this week... word on the street, they are expecting alot of cold weather. The snow has started falling earlier than usual. But not downtown...yet!

Hope this helps even just a few people... Im also happy to answer any questions anyone may have :)

Flights, visa and insurance will cost you the bones of €1500 for starters.

  • Registered Users Posts: 116 ✭✭tosh_2006

well 1500 is not to bad we have about 3,000 euro already saved each and we're not looking to go till oct 2011

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,988 ✭✭✭dirtyghettokid

save as much as you can. aim to have at least $2,000 per month to live for the pair of ye. like have enough of a nest egg to do ya a couple of months if you can't find work straight away. it'll be cheaper if you don't live in major cities.

Most countries can apply direct for this type of visa, but only usit administer it in Ireland. The canada immigration website directs you to usit.

You might. It's not a definite requirement unless you have been in trouble with the law before, in which case you will need a police cert for every country you've lived in for over 6 months.

perhaps he had his wires crossed, but i doubt it since he works for the government's immigration department (although the caveat is that he's there for business immigration, so perhaps he was thinking of something else)

I stand corrected. I was thinking back to when I did it and USIT told me to get a UK one as I spent 2 years living over there (not that I was ever in trouble with the law :p).

I'd say just send an email to USIT (canada@usit.ie) and ask them. They should be able to give you a definitive answer. If they do say you need one give yourself plenty of time to organise it as they can take a few weeks to show up.

given that there are a few hundred countries in the world, and canada issues perhaps a dozen different types of visas with different requirements depending on the country the applicant is from, it's probably fair to say he had his wires crossed. unless he put it in writing you should take it with a pinch of salt!

That being said, if you applied direct to the London embassy and got someone who wasn't familiar with the open employment visa programme for Ireland they might just issue you with a visa.

Hello, anyone recommend where to go in Vancouver for New Years Eve. Had a look online but there doesn't seem to be much happening in way of outdoor celebrations except boat cruise. Any advice would be great. Also does anyone know of a place to rent there short term early Jan for a couple, looking for somewhere until we find our own place. I was thinking of booking a homestay but I can't decide as there are so many places. Thanks folks!

    Hi Guys,
Thinking of moving to Canada next year and have a few questions people might be able to help me with.
    - How difficult is it to get work.
    - Is the cost of living dearer/cheaper then Ireland.
    - How difficult is it to get a visa to stay permanently.
    - What is the best city to head to.
    Cheers for any help!!!!!
