    Hi Guys,

My partner and I are hoping to move to Toronto in 2011. We are awaiting the USIT 2011 visas to open...is there anything I can be doing in the mean time so that we are ready when they re-open or is there anywhere we can apply?

I'm hoping that at least one of us can secure employment before we go- I'm a performance analayst (5yrs+ exp) and my boyfriend is completing his Masters in Finance, Investment and Treasury he's hoping to get a job as a junior trader. Any advise on companies, recruiters etc?

Dont use USIT to get your visas. USIT had a monopoly on the market up until 2011 where you can now get your visas through the Canadian embassy and without using a middle man i.e usit. Between you's this will save easily 800e. USIT have been ripping people off by charging 400e for visas where they will only charge around 50e through the Canadian embassy...

How do you do it without USIT?

I looked on the Canadian website and couldn't find anything about applying for an under 35's visa- do you have a direct link?

you will have to wait till january till its open, i think its the 25th then you will be able to do it directly with the canadian embassy.

Only messing with you. the Irish here seem to spread out, no distinct Irish area, downtown, Commercial Drive, Main Street and Kits seem to be where alot of people end up.

Saw your "Ireland" post earlier, and looked the other way. Be glad that our mods on the North America forum are very relaxed, sit in the background, and generally allow a great bit of latitude when posting, provided that no one officially reports a post (and wakes us up from our voluntary slumber).

    Hi Folks,

I'm going to apply for the 2011 USIT U35 program once it launches. In the meantime what can I do to be ready to apply once it launches? There's talk here of a garda cert? Can someone let me know how I get this? Any other requirements I can have ready beforehand?

    Thanks for any help

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 578 ✭✭✭inode

just have money ready before hand to enter the programme.

If you are wanting to go to Canada ASAP get your garda cert now by getting an application from a Garda station or their website and then just post it to your local superintendent and play the waiting game

i'm not sure if the form is available online.

Generally you need to submit a written request to your local garda station (and not the garda vetting unit!). My local garda station gave me a template to fill out when I eventually found someone familiar with the process. They also wanted to see my passport so it will not be possible to post the request to the superintendent unless you personally know him, not to mention that it will probably be his clerk who deals with it. Although it can take a few weeks, I'd give them a call if I didn't receive it within 2 weeks.

The Irish are very spread out in Vancouver - don't expect it to be like Sydney for example as it's nothing like it whatsoever! They don't all hang around in groups but you'd find a few definitely in Kits and Yaletown as they are popular areas.

Anyone find the price of alcohol in toronto a bit price.

Between $6-7 then add $1 as a tip.

Usually if Im out in bar/pub, we add the tip at the end of our session rather than on individual pints.

Obviously its different in a nightclub when you need to go directly to a bar to get your drink.

I'm usually too drunk to tip at that stage. ;)

Run a tab and tip at the end. If you go to the bar to get the pint you dont normally have to tip. Its not like the States on that front.

(edit) Oops just noticed Fat Tone said all that above :)

    Hi everyone,
    Happy new year

I'm seriously thinking of getting the under 35 working visa when it comes up again this year.

Just wondering how did everyone find getting work etc?

I don't have a degree, came out of school and worked in insurance sales for the last 6/7 years.

Anyone any experience of getting insurance/banking/office work in Toronto/Calgary etc?

Hope yous are all enjoying it over there!!

Yeah, there's no online form but they sorted me out with a form at the station. 3-4 week wait tho. Sure we'll have to wait.

ring the supers office in the station, i got mine in less than 24 hrs! but i used to be a memeber of AGS so that may have been a factor
