Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

He was a reserve when he first got called up iirc, and then got into the Stoke side.

    Stephen Ireland
    Steven Reid
    Lee Carsley
    Andy Reid
    Chris McCann
    Keith Fahey
    Keith Andrews
    James McCarthy
    Owen Garvan
    Stephen Quinn
    Darron Gibson
    Rory Delap

........... probably one or two I've missed but they're players I'd pick ahead of Whelan.

Anyone keeping a count on the amount of aimless punts from the Irish side?

They are but the application didn't get passed FIFA afaik.
Its the same reason he couldnt play for Aus before 03/04 afaik. He'd played for the Solomn Islands at 1 stage in a friendly & was ineligible until the rules changed & then Australia came a knocking for him!

    Edit: Samoa even

We need Stephen Ireland back, we need Andy Reid to lose some weight, and we need Stephen Reid fit. Bring in players like Fahey around them. Gibson and Whelan is not good enough at all at all.

And Kilbane, he's been a huge player for us in the past - and dedicated player, but he's past it at this stage.

On another note, I heard the guy say Cahill was turned down when he applied to play for us.

Why was that? I taught his grandparents were Irish?
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/world_cup_2002/1820871.stm

FIFA blocked him because he'd represented Western Samoa in a youth side apparently.
Obviously he's not playing for Western Samoa now though. Bit pants really!

Absolutely zero positives from an Irish point of view in this game, septic rubbish.

Should be all ahead of Whelan in the pecking order IMO. I'd even consider John O'Shea although it would mean a considerable defensive reshuffle.

Just back , shocking game, the Aussies were good but Ireland were just tripe so they would make it easy for anyone.

    Absolute rubbish.

Nolan looked ok when he came on and folan put in another good shift. Keane had flashes but other than that it really was awful stuff.

My god Ireland are terrible. Really disappointing match.

Now that I've mulled it through - this could be a blessing in disguise. Perhaps this performance will FINALLY prove to Trap that Glenn Whelan and Keith Andrews just aren't good enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,591 ✭✭✭✭Aidric

Is Trap getting english lessons off Joe Duffy? Sure, sure.

As a pair or individually? Andrews is better then the rest we have in the squad in that position at the moment! Thats depressing!

    So, that was €55 right?

I'm beginning to think Trap is a bit of a con artist with Brady his side-kick. Not good enough at all.

The summer of next year will be spent indoors watching real footballers thank God!

I think the team selection has been poor. This I feel is Trap's main weakness. The game tonight was crying out for someone like Lee Carsley to get a hold of the game. Can't remember which one of the goals it was in the first half but both Gibson and Whelan were very slow in getting back to pressure the Aussies. I reckon that goal could have been avoided.

Not often you see a team come to Ireland and show more passion and commitment than ourselves. I thought Hunt worked hard when he came on and felt sorry for Robbie Keane who had a few moments of top quality. Overall though it was desperate stuff. I don't know if a few of the players are mentally still on their holidays but if we play like that over the next few months we can forget about South Africa.

He won't because that would be admitting defeat, he's out to prove a point...granted Steven Reid would come back in when fit but he won't back down on A. Reid and he won't pull out the the stops for S. Ireland...as pointed out there are a plethora of better midfield combinations but he won't show weakness and back down on his stance

I'm slowly coming round to the idea that seeing the back of him after his current contract is up won't be at all a bad thing...he's somehow got results but his teams are awfull, always tedious stuff to watch

Emmmm Stephen Ireland does'nt want to play for his country. Nowt Trap can do about it.

    Ideal line up for Cyprus:

    Given

    Foley - Dunne - St Ledger - O'Shea

    McGeady - McCann - S.Reid - Ireland

    Keane - Doyle

Too much to ask? Ireland isn't great in the centre of a 4 man midfield. Unlikely McCann will get picked but surely the best defensive midfieder we have? If not then Andrews please, ANYONE but Whelan. Kilbane is past it, and although I respect his professionalism and commitment he shouldn't have near the number of caps he has. Duff, unlike Kilbane, used to be a class player but is s***e now.

Wait a minute - people are calling for a lad called Chris McCann - the same Chris McCann who scored for Northern Ireland tonight against Israel?

Eh? No, he's a Dublin lad and the heartbeat of the Burnley team. You're probably thinking of Grant.
