what should i look for in an external hard drive, what make is best and where is best to purchase

One thats bubble wrapped, they break to easy i brought mine(A Toshiba one) broke while i brought it to a mates house, and my brothers is the same one and he brought it to work and it broke!! And the online help from Toshiba is terrible and no use.

Try to make sure that it has a 7200 RPM spin speed, the next lower speed is 5400 RPM which is dog slow.

I've been using a 500gb Western Digital Passport HDD for a few months and very happy with it.

Its small, compact and no need for external power. Its fast enough for my needs aswell.

Western Digital, Maxtor & Seagate would be good makes to go for imo.
