Interested in photographing Traveller Bareknuckle Boxers... anyone any contacts?

Hi

I'm trying to photograph Traveller Bareknuckle Boxers for a feature in a UK magazine. I know they don't generally fight in public anymore. Anyone any idea how I'd get in contact with these guys?

It's for a UK magazine but I'm Irish and I grew up around the Travelling people. I just don't know any of the fighters.

I'm more interested in culture of the Travelling people, fighting in particular, not the Danny Dyer angle, I can assure you!

What do you mean you grew up around them? Do you know any? I deffo wouldnt go right up to them and ask, thats for sure

I've taken a fair few boxing pics in the past year. I also worked where a lot of travellers would see my work. I know a lot of travellers actually are members of boxing clubs nowadays, many would approach me and ask what club I shoot for.

Smithfield boxing club has a few travellers I think so maybe contact the club and ask could they possible connect you.

Yeah, they might assume I was challenging them and proceed to beat the ****e out of me.

I grew up in one of those towns around the country blessed, shall we say, with a particularly high Traveller population. Went to school with lots of them. Really lovely kids the most of them.

Although from what I've heard, many of those lovely kids have grown up to be not-so-lovely adults.

As Smelltheglove says, go to one of the clubs, you'll probably get all the answers your looking for

it sounds like you want a bareknuckle fight and smelltheglove has contacts for settled travellers who are involved in local boxing clubs.

to get images of actual bareknuckle boxing it might take you weeks to get the right connections in the traveller community....or even for a fight to happen. (at best you might get an hour or two of notice).

it might be worth contacting the newspapers that had pictures last year and ask them for their contact. (I think it was News of the world or Sunday world...or maybe the Star)

I think the actual Bareknuckle Boxing is illegal, but I cannot see how reporting & recording it is.

However, I am going to lock the thread & anyone who wants to contact the OP can do so by PM.
