Theres a positive review on Rotten Tomatoes!!

    Don't read it, very spolierific.
Says technically the film is outstanding but should have been braver with story, trying to please everyone.

2-3 days to go and still no review.

Loads of French & German reviews plus viewer reactions from Monday's screening in Paris.

General consensus from them being that it's good (If average) but not a great sci-fi and far from being an adult film people were expecting.

Everyone agrees it looks stunning (3D has gotten good marks) and that Rapace & Fassbender are great in it but everything else from the plot to the soundtrack have been pointed out as being weak, even from those who liked the movie.

Official UK and Irish screenings are today.

Did Alien have a great story though? I mean really at the end of the day, it was a simple enough story, I think Aliens had a much more detailed story.

The soundtrack issues are very annoying though.

Interesting that the Interweb tells me that Alien got mixed reviews, were Aliens got Universal praise.

Reviews from Variety and The Hollywood Reporter are up now and they are fairly mixed as well.

    WARNING: Both reviews contain SPOILERS!

I'm sure that I'll still enjoy the film, but going by the mixed reviews, it seems like we have another case of being suckered by hype and marketing. :o

I'm actually encouraged by the Bradshaw review. He generally hates genre films, so the fact that he has anything good to say about Prometheus bodes well.

    Empire 3/5

Fairly poor review. The marketing budget mustn't have included a 15 page spread with behind the scene access and a 3D holographic cover option ;)

Only 3 stars from Empire? That's poor. The lack of suspense claim is worrying too.

Despite being a huge Batman fan, this is still the movie I'm most looking forward to this year. I have been trying to temper my expectations for a while by reminding myself of a few things ... Lindelof, GI Jane, Robin Hood, Hannibal.

Yeah, it sure is. And normally Empire are that bit more positive towards the blockbusters.

Could have an Alien Resurrection on our hands, all style no substance.

Heading to the midnight screening of this in Blanchardstown tonight. Does anyone think I should pre-book the tickets or would it be alright to get them at the cinema tonight?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,905 ✭✭✭✭Handsome Bob

But there's no getting away from the total lack of any cumulative sense of dread, nor from the essential emptiness at the film's core. Like Fassbender's discomforting robot, Prometheus is stunning to look at and initially intriguing, but in the end fatally lacking a soul.

    http://www.digitalspy.ie/movies/review/a384564/prometheus-review-ridley-scott-returns-to-his-alien-sci-fi-roots.html

3 Stars from Digital Spy. Regardless of what you think of the likes of Empire and DS, the criticisms I've been reading are saying more or less the same thing.

Surprised that the script seems to be being singled out as a weaklink. You'd think after all the time and effort seemingly poured into it they'd have crafted something interesting!

Ambiguity seems to be one criticism of the script, you'd swear a Lost co-creator wouldn't know a thing about what that means. :pac::pac::pac:

8.5/10 lads, I am a complete Alien fanboy and loved it. Any questions then ask but don't spoil it just go tonight!

It may well turned out to be a disappointment, but I continue to be encouraged by the reviews, even the negative ones, as they suggest Scott has returned to his visual and stylistic roots. Alien and Blade Runner are hardly universally loved films. It's fair to say that most people prefer Aliens. And Blade Runner has never lacked for detractors. It's arguably a muddled mess of a film as well, but it's absolutely glorious to look at. And all the talk of ambiguity and unanswered questions excites me because it should give us something to talk about afterwards. I hold the rather controversial view that Lost answered too much rather than too little. I don't really care if some of the characters in Prometheus are underdeveloped or lack camaraderie. Did 2001 have well developed characters? This is Ridley Scott we're talking about. I want a visual experience that I will remember.

I'm not sure what they mean by 'ambiguity'. Curious to find out, I guess, but some mystery isn't a bad thing in the blunt force that is Hollywood cinema.

The visuals certainly seem like they're worthy of applause, which is great. Guess we'll all be able to tell tomorrow. Have a ticket booked for seven tomorrow evening, and look forward to at least some pretty images.

    But of course:

Either way, sounds like Fassbender has delivered another top performance. Even from the negative reviews they point out he's one of the best thing in it and raises the movie from being a throwaway sci-fi.

I'm looking forward to the visuals, though, even if most reviews (good & bad) have pointed out how generic the plot is with it's supposedly lazy ambiguity that Lindelof is known for.

Got tickets for me and my mates for the 00:05 showing tonight in Cineworld! Can't wait!

Can't wait to see Fassbenders performance either. He's the best thing to come out of Ireland in a long time!

Yes, press screening. Going to go see it again tomorrow probably in 2D. The 3D was excellent mind you. I just thought it was brilliant. There was even done subtle Easter Eggs in it. And a tribute to Zelda fans LOL

Unfortunately any review I read about it has majorly spoiled it for me now anyway - I guess if you read 3 or 4 together some spoilers are going to filter through.

Seems a mixed bag at the moment. Hoping its good but I'm not holding out for it to be another Alien anyway!

Good read, I get the impression that you think it's being harshly judged against Alien and Aliens rather than as a standalone sci-fi film?

True, or at least that many will have extreme reactions because they're hoping it's on the same level as the two. For the first two-thirds it's an absolutely amazing sci-fi film, though the third act left a bad taste.

Re: the final 3rd, I don't know how I'll feel about the things that go unanswered. As a Lost fan I always loved reading different theories in regards to all the mysteries, and it didn't bother me in the end when some things were never answered. So if Prometheus gives me that kind of food for thought, I'd be all for it.

But it's a different kettle of fish, one's a TV show with over 121 episodes with well fleshed out characters, another is a 2 hour film with seemingly poor character development.

So I'm curious to see how it works to say the least.

without spoilers, is it gory? was the much debated R rating deserved?

Got tickets for midnight showing tonight in Cineworld. I can't wait. I've been looking forward to this since I first heard it was in the works.

Anyone know what the midnight showings are like turnout wise? It's free seating...

It's neither gory nor that scary (there's more a sense of dread, rather than a feeling you're about to scared) although the R rating is deserved for one particularly intense scene.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,843 ✭✭✭Arciphel

I don't think there was even one swear word in it. I think there is some credence to the rumour that Fox made Ridley cut it to get a PG-13 cert and then when it wasn't achieved they didn't have time to re-cut it (re-assemble?) it again to take advantage of the R rating.

Without spoiling anything, what was the problem with the third act?
