Any thoughts on renovating rattly sash windows. I understand there is a plastic strip with felt that can be fitted, which replaces the worn strip of wood which guides the window. Steps in dis-malting and fitting appreciated.

This job is a specialised job and not for the faint hearted especially if you have large windows.

    First remove the staff beads

    Take out the bottom sash

    Remove the parting bead

    Open up the pocket covers

    Take out the top sash

Weigh both sashes and make up the extra weight with make weights or you may have to cut the weights to reduce the weight as I have had to do on several occasions

Route a line along the mid rail and the bottom of the bottom sash to take 2 strips of draught proofing

Cord the top sash and hang it ensuring the weights are not resting on the sill

Install the parting bead with a draught proof strip

Cord the bottom sash and hang it to ensure it will rest on the sill with no gap

    Replace the pocket covers

    Install the bottom parting beads

Install the new staff beads with draught proof strip

Normally when I do this I replace all the fittings.

Word of caution do not let anybody sell you plastic pulleys they cost about 70c each and are not worth it at all.

If you are going to do this I suggest you go for ball bearing pulleys brass or other wise.
