    Thanks, but I don't fancy getting into a whole Dell vs other brands debate. Suffice to say, I'd never recommend Dell. That's not a scientific opinion, it's only based on personal experience fixing machines.

    Thank you for all your help dilallio, I ended up restoring to factory settings, it seems to be working ok now but I'm sure time will tell,

    so it has fixed the problem even though it may have been extreme, rather that then having to send it away for 4/6 weeks,

    once again thank you very much.:)

    just thought id update for anyone whos interested. Technician for Dell came out to the house Friday morning as arranged and had a new hard drive installed within seconds id say he was there for 10 mins max!!

    anyway laptop seems to be working fine now and the oh reckons they gave me a hard drive with more space on it so its really flying now.

    thanks for all the suggestions and advise!!!
