I wish there was some place we could compare and contrast the big four players, based on their talent on paper, without having to listen to platitudes like

'but Ferguson knows what he is doing'
'We have lost big players before and always come back'
    etc.

It is driving me mad, I don't see chelsea, arsenal or liverpool fans coming out with this sort of anti-topic stuff.

I would like to set up a new thread but know it will get abused.

Only saw this now. Still in two minds about him. I don't like this diamond formation we have on the go at the moment, our old one is proven and very effective but he has to stamp his authority on the team i suppose. He is there to win the Champions League and i think he can do it for us but i fear he will take time to adapt to the English game and can see us dropping silly points under him.

He was probably the best man for the job out there but i will not be surprised if he is sacked in 3 months.

I gotta also display my amazement that this guy is saying Torres is mediocre. Maybe at styling his hair. I'm not his biggest fan by a long way but he's not 'mediocre at best'.

Liverpool will fall down for the same reason they have in the past, a lack of natural width that breaks down poorer teams on a more consistant basis. Ultimately, Liverpool play a striker who provides very little width, and Yossi, who is more of a central attacking midfielder.
Uniteds wingers are more natural wingers, bar Rooney of course, and likely to provide proper width.

Rafa is still sticking to his guns and playing the narrow game, and I think it'll be the downfall.

i think johnson will offer a bit more width at full back than arbeloa did.
might be worth 5 or 6 extra points to liverpool this season...;)

Hull City and Blackburn Rovers have both reportedly matched Real Madrid's £15million asking price for striker Alvaro Negredo.

The 23-year-old's agent also insists that his client has not ruled out a move to Zenit St Petersburg, who are understood to have offered the player a hefty £60,000 a week.

The representative Alejandro Camano has confirmed talks with Hull chairman Phil Duffen and has also been talking to Roma, but Madrid are not keen on the loan deal that the Italians are offering.

The La Liga giants sold the player to Almeria last summer but brought him back on a buy-back option for £4.25m purely with objective of selling him on at a higher price and offered him to Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool earlier this summer.

Madrid would like a similar buy-back option when they sell him on and are keen to see how he adjusts to English football after rejecting approaches from Sevilla and Villarreal.

On talks with Duffen, Camano told the Hull Daily Mail: 'I have had calls with the chairman. He (Negredo) likes the team and it's possible he will play in the Premier League. The chairman is a good man but the deal is not totally 100 per cent yet.'
    Real Madrid's Alvaro Negredo

Negredo is thought to be concerned that Hull could struggle in the Premier League this season and Camano said: 'I spoke with the Roma management, and the Giallorossi would be an ideal club for my client.

'However, this does not mean that he is close to Roma. Things can change very quickly in football.

'It is true that the player is also sought after in England, but the only certain thing right now is that he is a Real player and anything can happen. Zenit? It is a possibility.'

Blackburn have signed strikers Nikola Kalinic from Hadjuk Split and Franco di Santo on loan from Chelsea but still have money to spend after raising £21m from the sales of Roque Santa Cruz and Matt Derbyshire to Manchester City and Olympiakos respectively.

Stephen Hunt must be fond of the relegation battles. Hopefully it'll work out for him.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/teams/h/hull_city/8194503.stm
Hull have completed the signing of Reading winger Stephen Hunt for what the Royals say is a "sizeable fee".
The 29-year-old Republic of Ireland international has signed a four-year deal with the Tigers.
"Stephen has been very effective in the years he has been at Reading," said Royals football director Nick Hammond.
"He has made it known that he was ready for a new challenge and this is a good move for all three parties."
Hunt earned his 18th international cap in Republic of Ireland's 3-0 defeat by Australia on Wednesday night after being given special dispensation to leave the international set-up to formalise terms in Hull on Tuesday.

Liverpool do not have what it takes to win the Premier League, says Patrick Barclay

The Times Chief Football Commentator gives his verdict on the club's prospects for the new season. He talks to Ben Smith
What will the mood be at Anfield as the season begins?

It would have been much more optimistic had Liverpool managed to hang on to Xabi Alonso. He had become a key component of the team and the midfield partnership he formed with Javier Mascherano gave the whole team a solid look and enabled Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard to attack without the Liverpool captain having to worry about protecting his back four.

The loss of Alonso would be my major reservation about their chances. Overall they are a slightly weaker team than last season and their best chance of the title has come and gone. It's a real shame because it was all building up very, very nicely for Liverpool.

What did you make of their summer transfer activity?

Glen Johnson will certainly add drive down the right. He is a wonderful attacking full back and he will give Liverpool much more conviction down that right hand side. But he isn't as good a defender, in fact teams will target Liverpool in that area and attempt to get into the space behind him. We saw last night in the England match that Johnson was badly exposed down the Holland left.

Alberto Aquilani is clearly a talent, but I am not sure he is in the same class as Alonso, in terms of his leadership qualities. He's certainly not a bad acquisition.

Alonso's departure will affect the general solidity of the side and that could put more pressure on the back four than last season, asking more questions of Martin Skrtel, Jamie Carragher and Daniel Agger.

    Who is their key player?

Torres. If I have a worry about Torres it is that he has had another pretty busy summer with the Confederations Cup, when he really could have done with time off. He was out injured for some time last season so maybe that will even things up and allow him to come back refreshed.

He's arguably the best striker in the world. If Liverpool can can get 34 league matches out of him, they ought to get 20-25 goals - that's how good he is. We saw what happened on the rare occasions that he and Gerrard played together last season, we all remember the 4-1 win at Old Trafford.

Which young player is most likely to make an impact?

I like the look of the Emiliano Insua, the Argentine left back. He's young, hard-working and a very constructive footballer.

If Agger qualifies as a young player then I would also include him. He is a wonderful footballing centre half and I am looking forward to seeing him after a season blighted by injury.

What is the best and worst that Liverpool can hope for?

The best Liverpool can hope for is to finish second. I just can't see them having the strength to compete with Chelsea or even Manchester United. They do have real strength, they have an outstanding goalkeeper in Pepe Reina and Carragher is a great character and an inspiration, but I just can't see them being as strong as last season.

The worst would be fifth, that's assuming things really went against them and they had problems with injuries.

    found it interesting

alot of mention of alonso and defense in that article, hmm thought that the weakest part of his game by far, often found wanting when attempting to mark on free kicks and corners (Ivanovic just ran off him twice at anfield without any pressure), losing boro defender last year at a corner in 2008 which lead to a goal

to be fair, giving out about his defending on corners isn't really the same as defence being a weak part of his game - just that he (a central midfielder) isn't great on corners. On the contrary, his defensive game was brilliant. As well as never being shy of a tackle, and happy to rack up the kilometers chasing, his second best attribute after his passing was his ability to spot and make interceptions.

I reckon if Doyle can stay fit and hit form they have the striker that any bottom half team needs to be safe, likewise a great purchase in hunt. Ebanks-Blake also could grab a hatful so there's goals there and a very decent keeper in hahnemann.
I'll be honest though I'm not sure how well their midfield and defence will cope in the prem, it's always hard to judge from last years performance.
If I had to put moeny on it either way I'd say they'll stay up.

Apologies for not using our designated thread, but can I get your thoughts on our Premier Leauge review?

Would you recommend a different format. Perhaps concentrate on the big games and list the rest, or maybe add a particular feature?

Have to say im liking the site, its coming on really well, and as for the format of that page id stick with it as when i go to read reviews like that i like to get an idea of what happened in all the matches and not just one or two in particular, and from a web designers point of view the paragraphs are around the right size because if you started going into more depth in one or two of the matches the page would get larger and larger and having to keep scrolling down is a no no, so in short - more of the same :p
