    Stupid IMO
That's the thing, though... Kaka and Ronaldo, I can see why they qualify as Galacticos and bring in huge marketing revenue and shirt sales, merchandise, etc.

Xabi Alonso I see as a purely football purchase, but one that I think it's vital they made because they have to have success on the pitch as well.

But if the choice is between Benzema and Villa at roughly similar prices, I'd see it as a pure footballing decision and choose Villa - surely Benzema won't be bringing in huge money from image rights and shirt sales?

Villa was said to have wanted Barcelona more, even apparently going as far as paying the remainder of the transfer fee when Valencia wanted 5 more million that Barca were willing to pay. Benzema is not as good, but he is one of the 'prodical' youth stars at the moment, along with Aguero, Messi, etc. Madrid was signalling their intent at having what many people see as the next Ronaldo, and apparently Zidane helped court him with the whole French connection.

I watched the one in polish.

I was in and out and didn't see a lot of it. Were barca worth 3 goals?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,296 ✭✭✭✭gimmick

TBH, I only saw the 2nd half and Barca absolutely peppered the Bilbao goal. Could easily have been 5 or 6. Ibra had a chance or two which, had he been a bit more confident would have scored, instead he passed and chances were lost.

Also forgot Guti still played for real!

Madrid were really vulnerable at the back. It's going to be very entertaining watching them this year. I wonder what odds you could get on them not having a 0-0 game all season.

It's laughable how much money they spent while the back four seemed to completely slip their mind, can't always rely on one-man-army Casillas...

Garay and Albiol will blossom into an amazing partnership. May not seem so now, but mark my words on it.

Aint gonna happen. Its most certainly an attitude of "we're gonna score more than you".

Its great to have nice football back n tv :)

Raul still is the main man for Madrid, its astounding how he has kept this level of consistency for so long (bar those bad spells when the team won nothing and he was deployed as an attacking midfielder).

God, that Valencia pitch is some state. It's really atrocious for the end of August.

eze, I always wonder about the pic in your sig. I can read the bit that says: "salvavidas que se utilizan en Barca" but I can't read the bit in brackets underneath and I can never make out who the head belongs to.

It's basically a 'use this in the case of an emergency', firstly the lifebuoy on a boat, the life-jacket on a plane, and Messi for Barcelona... :pac:

Anybody watching Velencia V Sevilla, just started watching and Mata has scored a class goal and made an inch perfect 50 - 60 yard pass.

    Very impressive

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 21,296 ✭✭✭✭gimmick

Decent performance from Valencia. The pitch was outrageous though. Spoiled the flow of the game. Two great goals. Banega looked very good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 45,630 ✭✭✭✭Mr.Nice Guy

The pitch was a right shambles. Banega did play well. If Everton get him I reckon he could adapt well to the Premiership. I was impressed as well with the Seville right-back Konko. I don't think I've seen him before but I'll keep an eye out for him in the Champions League.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,267 ✭✭✭HalloweenJack

That was a cracking goal from Pablo, absolutely amazing finish, especially considering the surface. Valencia were the better side, some very good chances for them in the first half.

Anybody knows why Banega didn't go to Everton or Atlético for that matter?

Not certain, but from what I heard it was because Valencia couldn't find a replacement for him. Too late in the transfer window I guess

I thought I read that Messi wasn't in the squad as he's away off on international duty or something. Is this not true?

Oh **** ya, he left early so he'd have more days to train. Pedro will slot in for him. That means it'll be even more interesting to see if Zlatan can handle being the main man in this Barca front 3...

Manuel Fernandes is still out from his injury, so they can't let benega go until they have a replacement. I would love him to come to Everton. He was man of the match for me anyway against Sevilla.

Ya I saw him on tv the other night and was wondering about that - seemed a fair head of hair compared to what you used to be sporting haha

Decent, if unspectacular, display from Barca last night. Looked very much a start of the season game where a rhythm has not yet been found. Keita was by far and away MOTM for me.

Fingers crossed Bojans injury is not serious. He has 2 weeks to recover anyway.

Yeah, was just thinking the same thing myself alright about the picture quality. A hell of a lot better than it was last season. Watched it on the HD channel. Seemd to improve it a bit more as well.

Ha ha... yeah noticed that alright last night. He's had something done alright.

Keita was class last night. Into every tackle, getting in on crosses with his head, bursting back to help defence. He is in top form for sure. Barca with a lot of kids out had too much for Sporting. Nice to see Ibra get his first goal. Always the hardest one to get after a big move. At least he got it out of the way. I'm still a big Eto'o fan and I reckon he is a better option than Ibra, but i'm willing to give Guardiola and Ibra the benefit of the doubt.. I hope he does well, but if i was a manager, i'd have Eto'o every time.

Actually lads... Thought I'd ask the question here rather than on tickets and travel...

Heading over to Basque country in a few weeks on holiday. Bilbao are playing Villarreal at home on the weekend we are there.

From what I've seen online it seems you can get tickets the day before the game at some automated kiosks?

Anyone have any experience of this? or is there anywhere I can order online before we travel?

    Thanks..

They've got a decent enough squad, good enough to be comfortably midtable imo. They lost their opening game of the season against Athletic Bilbao away from home but I don't see many clubs getting much change from Bilbao on their home ground. Espanyol's season will basically rest on whether or not the players can recover after the death of Jarque. He was an absolutely massive player for them and will be sorely missed. They could well struggle this season because of that and could find themselves hovering around the relegation zone.
