    Aw c,mon,
time for a bit of reassurance to those who are genuinely concerned:)

Just about every site you visit including boards.ie logs your ip automaticly.
Generally they will never bother looking at it except to ban you/send you targeted ads/or stop you watching copyrighted material meant for another country(such as the BBC iPlayer)

You can switch on and off your router to slightly change your ip,
You can use a proxy service(just means you will appear to be in a diffrient country)
just about all the free proxy services are *traps*waiting to take over your computer to steal all thats on it.
some of the paid ones are safer.
also there are a very few proxy services that are free but are meant for people in China etc to speak to the outside world in times of crisis.

You can use these *Getarounds*but there main purpose is to help solve VERY serious crime,(for instance a proxy service logs your Real ip adress,it is available if interpol requests it)

Switching your router on and off may change your ip adress slightly but your isp will still know who you are.

You can also be banned, tracked by Mac adress(thats a slightly diffrient story. Google it !:)

No it doesn't. Presuming that when you say "they" you mean the DEA.

In other news the domain reg info for that site is listed as some dude with a gmail address and his address listed as 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue which is the White house.

    So it's obviously a dud.

hahaha so funny i forgot to laugh. Move along now please.

    Right on !

In essence your IP (internet protocol) address is like a regular address however since most Internet Service Providers allocate addresses on the fly cos they don't have one for every one. It's like taking a ticket to wait in a queue. That means if you turn off your router for long enough you'll get reallocated a ticket (IP).
ISPs know who had what IPs when and are legally obliged to give up that info if subpoenad. They don't have the right to sell it or anything though.

Long story short is it's akin to minute details like finger prints or DNA that could be checked out and collected if a serious crime occured.
Of course some ISPs ahem!!! Air Com cough! analyse your traffic anyway.
