I was looking online for a bottle of Verjuice (Verjus) - a vinegar substitute that is made from unfermented grape juice.

I found some on this website http://www.efoodies.co.uk/page/home

Then I started browsing through some of the other stuff here. Usual suspects are here, caviar, fois gras. The prices are meaningless as I never buy this sort of food, but I saw some other stuff and wondered who the hell buys this gear?

Crosnes at £48.60 a kilo. Thats the best part of 50 quid for a kilo of vegetable? Crosnes (or chinese artichokes) must be incredibly difficult to grow - maybe they can only be harvested on the high slopes of the Himalaya, right?!? Wrong - they are like spuds - a perennial tuber that can be grown in the back garden.

Banana puree at £11.60 a kilo. How bone idle do you have to be to buy a bucket of frozen mashed banana? Maybe I'm missing something? Maybe I've stumbled on a food porn site and the bananas are actually mashed between the thighs of vestal virgins?

Mint 120g at £3.40. That's 28 quid a kilo. FOR MINT! It's a weed - I've got tonnes of it growing in my garden.

Ever heard of Verveine leaves? Me neither. But at £105.00 a kilo, I won't be looking for it on the shelves at Tesco - Then again, it might be worth trying to get a few seeds...

Australian wild boar haunch, a snip at £69.80 for 4kg. Or in Australia, a pest that can be shot on sight.

It a fascinating website with many things that are beyond both my imagination and my pocket. What do you do with a bottle of pistachio oil that costs £90? I'd be so worried that it would spoil, I'd have it with everything.

As for the verjuice, the price is about twice as much as an alternative site I found.

They should rename it the recessionary "Let them eat cake" website...

'Fine products at even finer prices.' What an odd slogan. Also, the chocolate is far more expensive then the best handmade stuff from ZChoc.
