She doesn't have arms like a stick insect indeed, but wouldn't quite describe her deltoids and triceps as "thighs."

I do have to admit that I like the "hunting trophy" ensemble. The mink scarf is a little anachronistic but rather brave and individual considering the ire of the anti-fur lobby. She does push the boundaries of what is appropriate to read the weather, but who cares, its entertaining to watch out for.

My thoughts on it are that as meteorologist rather than a mere presenter, she is an employee of Met Eireann rather than RTE and as a result has more autonomy - I suspect the slightly individual dress style is an expression of greater power and autonomy.

The attention must be somewhat amusing. From what I've heard and read of Jean she seems rather refined and cultured and this kind of jars with the symbolic imagery of silver and leather dresses, which to some conjure up images of fetishism and BDSM (a leather frock, however, does not a dominatrix make!). So its a conflict of meanings - what Jean means (more than likely simple personal taste), and how all the different classes of viewer "reads" it - whether you are a guy practically **** off to it, a girl being critical of the dress sense, a hetero girls "girl crush" or just amused (or appalled) by it all.

What is even odder is how it seems to be creeping right across all of RTE - gone are the dull grey suits of yesteryear - even the guys are suddenly brushing up their dress sense for TV and many of the women are also starting to wear far more individualistic styles. Maybe its symptomatic of how institutions, norms and boundaries are breaking down in Ireland, in response to social change!?

I dunno, on the one hand I like to think that people should be able to dress however they like but then I guess it doesn't work like that in the real world. I do think it's unprofessional to wear clothes that detract from your work though.

The clothes we wear inadvertently convey a message about us which is why I think in this case Jean Byrne's clothes are inappropriate for work. Going out, yes. Work, no.
