Work has started on it, it's at the bottom of Merchant's road...any idea when it will be open though?

it will be good to have a cinema that is actually in the city centre

There was a story in the Advertiser last month - here's a link to it:

Looks like 2010 is the goal for opening. I thought it was going to be ready a lot earlier than that, but I guess it will still be a good while. I agree though, it'll be a great addition to the city.

Do ye remember when there was talk of them turning the Claddagh palace into an art house cinema and then they built.... apartments.

Small cinema with decent films.... finally

hopefully they'll be offering more reasonable admission than the Eye's scandalous prices (apparently justified by leather seats and some plush upholstery)

The Claddagh Palace should never have been knocked, it was one of our rare examples of Art Deco (in a manner).

Agree one zillion percent. A disgrace.

One of my favourite films is Cinema Paradiso. There's the scene when the cinema is knocked and I'm there thinking of the Claddagh Palace ...

Where on Merchant's Road is it? Is it that new glass-fronted building beside The House Hotel, where Senator Windows used to be?

    Yup that's the one.

And here's a tune for the Cladagh Palace people...
"And me whack fa me do, doodle adle..whack fa me do, doodle adle" ahhhh them were the days ..when a busker stood before the door of the place as you paid to get in :D

    Showing my years there lol

No it's going to be a brand new building designed by Tom DePaor Architects (responsible for the renovation of the Druid Theatre) on the corner of Merchant's Rd and Dock Road - ie just across from the city museum. I'll try and dig out some images - it looks a bit mad but potentially very cool...

Although the design for the cladding has apparently changed a lot since these images were released...
I realy like the "tower house" vibe... It'll definitely be someting very unique to Galway!

Well it's about time! So sick of seeing that all the good movies are only being shown in Dublin or Cork because the people of Galway apparently only want to watch Dance Flick or whatever... A little diversity wouldnt go amiss!

Good question, anyone got a serious answer??

And would it likely to be cheaper than the other cinemas in Galway?

I'd say itd be very similar in offering and probably price to the IFI or the Lighthouse in Dublin- A mixture of more left-field popular films like "Inglourious Basterds", foreign language films and full on art-house stuff like seasons of particular directors like Bergman or David Lynch - links below:

    http://www.lighthousecinema.ie/index.php

Also galway film society will most likely re-locate to the new building so the kind of films that they show should also give an idea of what to expect. Their programme for Autumn Winter 09-10 will be available soon as it kicks off again in the Town hall at the end of the month.

Apparently the top floor cinema in the new building will also be suitable for small scale theatre, live gigs and conferences so it should be a pretty flexible venue. The building will also have a cafe/bar and shop similar to that in the IFI Dublin.

Sounds sweet. I'm not exactly an arty-farty person but willing to give it a go! :p

    Hey I was serious!
Who's up for the 9 songs special edition screening.

Slightly more seriously like citycentre I expect it will be a Galway IFI.
About time too if Galway wants to claim to be a city of culture.

Can think of much better art house films and porn at that, than 9 songs.
