Converting video files to mpeg

Hi, does anyone know of good free software for converting different video files into mpeg format? The ones i have tried let you use them once or twice and then try to get you to pay for it.

"Any video converter" Thats what it's called.. I use it to convert avi to mpeg etc. Runs well just a bit of a resource hog.
