Correct-but he said he found a bullet which is not illegal to have without a licence
And you're saying a bullet is not a component part of a round?

Did you not read the bit of legislation Sparks posted?

No idea whats going on so please humour me.
Whats the differance between bullet and round?
The round is the thing you load into the gun. The bullet is the little hard thing that goes flying out of the end of the barrel (and hopefully towards the target) when you pull the trigger.

The full assembly is a round.
What does metal jacket, hollow top mean?
The bullet fired can be of many different types, and it's not always just a lump of lead. Metal Jacket bullets have a harder shell than the core metal. Full Metal Jacket bullets like the one in the photo in the original post will hold their shape better when fired and on impact and will feed more reliably and won't leave lead deposits in the barrel so readily and so forth; hollow point bullets have a small hollow at the front end that mean that when the bullet hits the target, it deforms more readily, thus transferring kinetic energy into the target more efficiently (which enables a more humane kill when shooting deer or other animals). You can (and often do) have Jacketed Hollow Point, where the two features are combined.

So just remember that if you're shot, you can also be arrested for possession of ammunition.

    Yup.
Of course, if you're caught with, say, an M4 hex bolt in your pocket, you could be done for possession of an unlicenced firearm as well since that's a component part of a lot of firearms :D

    Nooooooooooooooooooooooo!

Well yeah deerhunter. I mean you've got the M4 hex bolt. Now all you need is another one of them, an action, a trigger, a barrel and a stock and you'd have yourself a firearm!

Giving it to the Gardaí seems the thing to do but if there is only one lad locally with a licence for that ammo you could be hanging him for carelessly loosing the ammo. At the risk of an outcry just dispose of it discretely and safely.

Not necessarily. If it was a "Full Metal Jacket" it would likely go all the way through & you'd be o.k. (as far as being arrested is concerned at any rate).

The moral is be careful what kind of bullets you get shot with.

Correct and right, and if your shot you would be hit with a bullet not a round so you could not be prosecuted for POSESSION

No, you can be charged with possession if you only have a bit of a round. Like say, a bullet.

BTW Flibble, if you get shot with a FMJ, can you be done for littering as well as possession? After all, you had possession of the round. The fact that it was only for 0.04 of a second is neither here nor there ;) And then you went and discarded it as though someone else was cleaning up after you your whole life...

No such thing as a bit of a round?

Course there are bits of rounds. Otherwise, how would you make a round? They're not quarks y'know.
