Athlone TV presenter Rob Ross has been installed sixth favourite at 8/1 to win RTE's new celebrity boxing show 'Lords of the Ring' by Paddy Power.
Although the line-up for the latest reality venture has yet to be officially announced, the bookmakers have odds for the twelve contestants reportedly lined up to take part including Fair City actors George McMahon and Maclean Burke and comedian Alan Shortt. The biggest name, former Man United winger Lee Sharpe is the red-hot favourite at 4/1 to be crowned king of the ring for the show, which is scheduled to air in August.
A total of twelve celebrities, including TV presenter Joe O'Shea at 16/1, Fair City actors George McMahon at 10/1 and Maclean Burke at 12/1 and comedian Alan Shortt at 18/1 are currently in training to get in ship-shape form for fight night.
Apprentice contestant and Gavin Henson look-a-like Ben Clarke is 8/1 while Irish entrepreneur and Dragon's Den star Sean Gallagher is the bookies dark horse to win the competition at 6/1.
Paddy Power is also betting the tough training could prove too much for some people and have opened a market on which celebrity will drop-out first. Mirror showbiz journalist Paul Martin is the bookies favourite at 7/2 to quit the show first, while Coosan native Rob Ross is 8/1 to leave the show and 10/1 to be eliminated first.
The full line-up for the celebrity boxing show is due to be officially announced shortly by RTE and production company Screentime ShinAwíl, makers of previous reality TV favourites like 'You're a Star' and the 'All-Ireland Talent Show'.

not too sure when this is starting

Former Apprentice star Ben Clarke has been forced to abandon his latest reality TV challenge over fears for his health.
The 23-year-old from Belfast has had to pull out of RTE’s ‘Lords of the Ring’ after a routine scan showed he had potentially lethal swelling at the base of his brain.

“He warned me that if I were to take a hard knock to the head it could result in bleeding to the brain and could be fatal.
”My whole world has fallen down around me, I thought I was invincible.
“But if they hadn’t found out about this before I started fighting on the show it could have been the end for me,” he said.

Ben is to be replaced by Big Brother 4 star Ray Shah.

Cabin Fever and now this. Do RTÉ want to be the first televised reality based death?

    Poor guy.

Ben was in the show, I flicked through it online anyone know if they announce that he won't be fighting?

He didn't fight in last nights show, we only saw him at training. I think it will be revealed in next Tuesdays show.

His chosen charity is [FONT=Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif]The Irish Anaphylaxis Campaign.

    Ugh... another rip off show...

Normally I don't mind them providing they advertise themselves as such but this is just like "You're a star" or "we're not going to pay the x factor licence fee so change the title"

Boxing shows have been done for years in the US (Even Stallone was pushing one a couple of years ago - "The Contender" IIRC)... I think they're all cancelled by now.

And as for "Celebrity"... Come on... unless we have the four members of U2, Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson, Westlife & Boyzone & possibly Andrea Corr (I think I might actually watch that) duking it out in there, there... Well it's not *really* celebrity, is it ?

Even when you look at so called "Celebrity" realtiy TV in the UK they don't have actual celebrities, it not like Anthony Hopkins, Tim Roth, Coldplay or anyone with any ounce of real fame goes on these shows.

Of course RTÉ do realise that these aren't really celebrities hence the name of the show is Charity Lord of the Rings, not sure if that is charity to the Ego's of the contestants or actual charity :D

I actually thought it was a bit different TBH.

And since when did Boyzone and Westlife become celebrities?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,489 ✭✭✭iMax

Well it is new to Ireland so I guess could be classed as different. The format. Is about ten years old though. As for boyzone & westlife, known internationally & millionaires in the entertainment industry, irrespective of wether they're rated or not, I think that would qualify them as bona-fide celebs.

Neither have made it in America, I don't know how well know they are outside Britian. And they currently don't need to do such shows. General most of these people are hasbeens before doing such shows, the boyzone and take that guys all did them before they return to stardom as did most of the people who do these types of shows.

Gernerally their are 3 types of celebs doing these shows: -

    1. Z list tabloiders
    2. People who had some fame but have since lost it
    3. Kind of knowns (generally Kid's TV presenters)

All of whom are looking for more exposure

I am guessing Robbie Williams will soon sign up for one of these shows.

For fear of becoming known as a boyband fanboy...

I don't think the fact they're not successful in the US should detract from their overall success. There's plenty of acts known in the US who never become successful outside there.

Anyway, I think we're getting off the point...

Why the "Charity Title" ? Let the show stand for what it is. I'm sure it's going to be compulsive viewing anyway, we don't need to tag it "Charity" or "Celebrity"... Lets just have "Lords Of The Ring"

The fact that Irish Celebs are only know in Ireland should detract from the fame in Ireland or their so called celeb status, in the same way as their are many British stars that aren't all that famous over here or anywhere but Britain. I mean if they had got Glen Hansard on board would you be wondering who he was?

They seem to advertise it as Lords of the Ring but Charity seems to be used on the show!

    It's a pity they didn't get a politician on the show :(

LOL...this show is an absolute classic. They could have made the whole series a one hour special with the lack of boxing. What a farce, how many contestants have pulled out now?! And the fact that they don't edit out the behind the scenes footage which makes the whole thing look even more amateur.

I don't even want to think about how many people turned down appearing in this show to say we're left with there ten randoms.

When are they going to tell Lucy Kennedy that she has to go in the ring to keep the show on the road?!

    Absolute. Pits.

Is there even any need to have Lucy Kennedy on this show? She contributes nothing, another example of RTE overkill with presenters.

why did john mcguire get eliminated?

He was deemed too strong for the other contestants. Yes. I know. They didn't think of that before hand.

This is a woeful "reality" show...

Quote "Meet my friend Mr Pain, you'll be getting well acquainted" (said in awful bogger accent while holding up fist)

    Woeful..

Barry McGuigian is a good presenter, why is Lucy needed? but then why is the show needed!

'Charity Lords of the Ring' stars Seán Gallagher and Paul Martin are set to do battle in the final.
The pair will compete in the ring in the hope of winning €26,000 for their charities.
Paul has reportedly been receiving a mixed reaction from fans of the show after opting to take extra boxing lessons with Kenny Egan.

    So who won?

AFAIK the winning charity got 10,000 euro.

Does anyone know what the viewing figures were like?

  • Registered Users Posts: 23,641 ✭✭✭✭Elmo

300,000 which I think is down from the other reality celeb shows RTE have done in the past. I think they didn't get the veiwer for the last couple of shows but won't see those figures until next week I would say.

www.medialive.ie you need to reg but it is free.

Also you can expect RTE One shows to do very well regardless of quality due to its position i.e. News and Current Affairs and Home produced programming. Home produced shows don't do as well on either RTE TWO or TV3 unless they are really good.

No I got that very wrong :(

    Below from rte.ie: -
The breakdown of charity money is as follows:

Maclean Burke: Baby Max Foundation - €5,100

John McGuire: Crumlin Hospital - €5,100

    Rob Ross: CARI - €8,600

Lee Sharpe: The Lee Sharpe Foundation - €8,600

    Jack Sheedy: Barretstown - €9,850

Ray Shah: Temple Street Children Hospital - €9,850

Alan Shortt: Mercy Hospital Cork- €11,100

Paul Martin: ARC House - €16,100

Sean Gallagher: National Council for the Blind - €17,350*

Joe O'Shea: Royal National Lifeboat Institute - €17,350*

*Joe O'Shea initially won €8500 for his charity following his first round win against Sean Gallagher. However, Joe was forced to retire from the competition following an injury to his hand. As a result Sean Gallagher was allowed back into the competition and as result the winning amount of €26,000 was spilt between both their charities

:( Ben Clarke and The Irish Anaphylaxis Campaign got nothing, after all his weeks of training, giving up his time.

They are badly in need of funds.
