Govt announces 1000 postgraduate places

The places are for unemployed people who would like to do postgraduate studies.The progs start in September 2009 and they are in seven universities and 13 ITs.Places are for people who have been on the dole for 6 months and above,they are free of charge for the 2 year duration.

I think it is a right step in the right direction.

I am considering undertaking one of the courses that the gov't have been offering, but don't know what one to choose. I have been unemployed for the last while, and want to get any kind of career again, so I can't decide which of these types of courses to select:

Financial Risk Analysis
Energy Management
Pharmaceutical Production

What I don't want to happen is to graduate in a year's time with another degree, and still be told that I have no experience and therefore can't get a job. I would appreciate anyone's thoughts on what course might offer the best opportunities for employment.

While this is a great idea,the courses on offer are very heavily geared to science or technological grads,of which Im neither.I also echo the sentiments of the poster above,what chance is there of being taken on should you take a totally new direction.I have 18 months post-grad experience and companies wont even look at me even for entry level or graduate programmes.

Hi,
I'm one of the lucky ones that got offered an MSc through the government scheme and I start in Sept. I'm still looking for work however and was wondering what's the situation if I become employed within the first year? My understanding was I am still excempt from paying the college fees (which would be €5500) as I am already in the system but if I would have to pay for my 2 year fees when the time comes around, which is fair enough, I'd have a job (or at least I'd hope to have one by Sept 2010!!)
The masters I'm doing is by online distance learning so it's kinda designed to suit some one who needs/wishes to work while doing it.I've been unemployed for a year and desperatly need to be working as well so it suits me if I do get a job...

I have a question regarding dole but I'm not sure if this is the right foram...I may have to travel to the college for induction/exams and workshops during the year and it may fall on the day I'm due to collect my dole and rent allowence. I know you have 3 working days to collect your dole but what about rent allowence?

I would definetly recomend availing of these courses especially if you can get them by distance learning...

all this for €500! not bad?
