Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

TV Licence In Rented Houses?

    Just wondering if anyone knows off-hand whether the responsibility for the TV licence lies with the tenant or landlord in rented properties?

    Also, what authority does the Inspector have to come into your home and look around?

    The inspector has no remit to enter your house and look for a television (unless there is legislation specifically in that area). My understanding is that if you do not permit them access, they'll simply return with a Garda and a warrant.

    If you're a tenant and you do not want to pay a television licence then you inform your landlord and tell him to remove the television from the premises.

    Just to clear something up. If you rent a house that already has a TV in it, does the landlord have to pay the licence fee?
    Another thing is, if the landlord wants to take the TV out, can he then make the tenant pay the licence?
    Any replies greatly appreciated.

    The tenant is always liable for the licence regardless of who owns the TV.

    If there's no TV, no licence is needed. No, the landlord cannot make the tenant pay for a TV licence if there is no TV on the premises.

    What if the tenant doesnt 'officially ' live there? That is, the tenant is not registered with any board or the landlord has listed the house as a holiday home.

    Doesn't matter, if you officially or unofficially live there. The legal responsibility basically falls to anyone on the premises who has possession or use of the TV to ensure someone has a licence for it, there's no requirement for you to be even resident there.

    That's my layman's reading of the rule.
