Two small but nice free online games. As the years suggest you either play in WWI or WWII and, yes, you can play the German side as well (for those who are inclined like myself ;) ):

    Warfare-1917

    Warfare-1944

    Have fun!

The best one for me (payment required) is the massive "World War II Online - Battleground Europe" (not to mistaken for BattleGround or Battlefield).

It's an online game 24/7 with hundreds of players (multiple server and machines support it). The weapon systems are accurate down to ballistics, sights and sounds. It's all from your point of view (like 1st Person shooter) but you can play all weapons from infantry to anti-airguns, anti-tank, drive tanks and other vehicles, use ships and even fly planes if that's your thing.(like flight simulator). There are coordinated air strikes, panzer attacks etc...it's just massive and addictive (I had to stop about three years ago or I wouldn't have down any research work) and I will definitely sign up again once my research is over.

You can play British, French or German and you rank up etc. The last time I played it the virtual battlefield with twons, cities etc was so large that it took 6 days in real life to walk from one end of the map to the other.

Needless to say I enroled immedieately with the Heer (Army) when I first started playing it. The offline training course allwos you to test all weapons and systems on a firing range which is great.

Link to youtube player movies (be aware that some are over a year old and the game is constantly developing further every couple of months):

EDIT: A nice explaination by KC23 how the general stuff of the game works like the map and choosing a brigade etc... (don't be fooled by the beginning. The action takes place in first person view!):

And something for the flight sim guys from the same game:

    :)

Yes, you'll need a certain minimum spec and fast internet (DSL rather than modem).

I used to pay every half year which reduced the costs a bit but otherwise, yes, I was happy with the $15 per month because I was playing every day and the fun was that you knew anything else in the game that was moving around was another player and not AI. Also, it is not restricted in player numbers like other online games and depending on the time you logged on there would be a massive amount of players online. However, since the game became more popular the players are located all around the world so you can be sure that there are players online 24/7 at any given time when you log in.

Fun but as I said, way too addictive once you get into it.

That sounds good Preusse, must check it out later though I have a slow connection too so it might not work for me.

I used to play 'Day of Defeat' Source, a sort of ww2 counter strike type of game, the weapon physics were fairly ok really in that you could shoot through walls, the amount of recoil etc. The 'Battleground Europe' one sounds very good.

There is one that a lot of people swear by but I could never get into it that much, 'Red Orchestra' it does have very realistic physics.

Also 'Call of Duty World At War' is ok but some parts are disturbing, ie encouraging players to kill unarmed germans. 'Medal of Honour Airborne' is not a historically realistic one (ie the monster sized flak towers & uber black-leather flamethrower nazis etc) but it's a good game if you can handle the lack of historical realism.

    Hi Morlar,

yes, I know the othe rgames. TYhe main problem I have with them is that there is a restricted player number and smaller map. The WWII Online is a beast. Granted the graphics may still be a bit behind some of the other games but that's what you get when playing this on such a massive scale.

There is ingame communication either by the message box or by microphone in the squad channels as well as by skype if you have a smaller group of friends playing in squad.

The squads have their own websites as well and post up dates when they are online etc. As a new player you will be inundated with invites to join a squad. I would wait and play for a while before making your mind up. You don't have to be in a squad but it can be fun when planning certain attacks and you have guys in your suqad specialising in different weapon systems and it all comes together in one attack or defense. One of the fun things is to rank up so you can choose parachute trooper and get on a plane and take part in airborne attacks etc. There's just so much scope.

New recommended specs, particularly for graphics cards will come out in the next week or so so just watch out for this. The old specs still posted on the site were fine for the last 6 or 7 years but a new patch is coming in (patches come in every couple of months with new features, etc.) and this one will change the system and notch it up a bit.

If you have an Eircom broadband connection (DSL) you should be fine. I played with this no problem.

And again, anything that moves in the game is another player. Any vehicle, person, plane or ship, any gun or flak....it's a steep learning curve at the beginning but once you have come to terms with the whole thing it's just great. I may invest in a new computer before re-registering for the game after my thesis. I wonder if I still have my ranks. They kept them in some cases even if you didn't play for some time but I am not sure how it'll be after a 4 years absence. :(
    :D
