Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

new car advice needed

Really don't know too much about cars etc. and don't want to end up getting a bad deal. Have just read some bad stories about cars bought from dealers/garages even.

Okay, so I have a 1996 VWpolo which is running grand, I've had it 2 and a half years, given me no probs except the head casket was changed 6 months ago and it has high mileage -155k on it. I reckon there is more life left in it though.
I have 3k in cash to spend as well.

So really I'm wondering what's the best car I can expect on this low budget? Am I mad thinking a trade-in would be worthwhile and should I just sell on my car privately- if so do you think I'd get 500 for it?

Models wise I do like Seat Ibiza Stella/Toyota/honda civic I guess but if I was able to trade in the Polo would I have to stick with VW dealers?

thanks for any help at all.

Try for scrappage? There are a few dealers offering it at the minute, some up to 4k for your car. It would be worth a try.

Alternatively, i think you may get €750 - €1000 if you try to sell privately. There is a market for small cheap cars at the minute.

    Cheers for reply Drummerboy.

Does scrappage mean instead of a trade-in - so if you are buying a new car with that dealer they'd give me 1k value for my car? Would that mean in total with the 3k and the car I'd have 4k to bargain with??

Kind of - but i reckon you may get more than 1k with scrappage. Possibly 2.5-3k, so that would leave you with around 5.5-6k to play with.

5.5-6k would be a brilliant scenario-- do you know any SEAT/Toyota dealers doing this scrappage scheme at the mo? And what do you reckon is the best of SEAT/Toyota I could then get with 5.5\6k?
Say for example Seat Ibiza Stella- what year /mileage should I be aiming for at best?
