I'm on the phone to them now, seen as never got my call back. Been waiting nearly 30mins now to speak to some one.

    Sigh

    Still on the phone?

I couldn't believe it when I was on hold for 15 minutes one day, it's an absolute disgrace to be waiting so long for ANY thing.

Have some news, off the phone with them. Plugged my net straight into my modem (bypass router) and back to normal pings. So my router is the problem! (9 Netgear WGR614v7) So now I'm trying to fix that. As other people in house use the wireless etc.

Hope that helps. When I get it sorted I'll post back.

Waited just over 30mins id say, then spoke to him for around 5 or 10 minutes, but in fairness he was very helpful and sound.

Still waiting that long is extremely uncool!

I just left phone on table on speaker while I watched TV and browsed net.

Something seriously wrong, why dosent someone in UPC admit it?

Right found something interesting. I can ping my teamspeak server hosted by Multiplay in the UK in 32ms, but my COD5 server shows 120ms, which is again hosted by Multiplay. My speeds were fine on Thursday night and now everything is crap (might get 7Mb, I'm on 20Mb).

So I did a tracert to my Teamspeak server:
    3 8 ms 6 ms 5 ms 84.116.238.6
    4 23 ms 22 ms 23 ms nl-ams05a-rd1-gige-3-0.aorta.net [213.46.160.97]
    5 22 ms 33 ms 22 ms fr-par02a-ra2-ge-0-0-0_0.aorta.net [213.46.163.90]
    6 23 ms 23 ms 23 ms xe-0-1-0-117.par20.ip4.tinet.net [213.200.76.133]
    7 32 ms 34 ms 29 ms xe-10-1-0.lon10.ip4.tinet.net [89.149.185.74]
    8 34 ms 31 ms 31 ms multiplay-gw-1.ip4.tinet.net [213.200.78.82]
    9 31 ms 32 ms 34 ms ts2.multiplay.co.uk [85.236.100.27]

    Tracert to my COD5 server:
    3 9 ms 6 ms 6 ms 84.116.238.2
    4 94 ms 90 ms 91 ms 84.116.238.22
    5 109 ms 108 ms 107 ms nl-ams05a-rd1-gige-3-0.aorta.net [213.46.160.97]
    6 110 ms 107 ms 108 ms fr-par02a-ra2-ge-0-0-0_0.aorta.net [213.46.163.90]
    7 107 ms 107 ms 163 ms xe-0-1-0-117.par20.ip4.tinet.net [213.200.76.133]
    8 116 ms 124 ms 115 ms xe-10-0-0.lon10.ip4.tinet.net [89.149.185.70]
    9 117 ms 118 ms 116 ms multiplay-gw-1.ip4.tinet.net [213.200.78.82]
    10 117 ms 119 ms 119 ms quad35.multiplay.co.uk [85.236.100.242]

    Tracert to speedtest.digiweb.ie
    3 5 ms 15 ms 5 ms 84.116.238.2
    4 91 ms 98 ms 93 ms 84.116.238.22
    5 94 ms 103 ms 92 ms to-inex-dub-deg-gw.digiweb.ie [193.242.111.20]
    6 98 ms 96 ms 97 ms speedtest.digiweb.ie [89.234.64.80]

See hop 4 to 84.116.238.22? It immediately adds 90+ms to the ping. I bet yea someone's added a network device or somethings been misconfigured somewhere. If someone is on to NTL/UPC can they bring this up with them?

If I have to deal with them again, I'll be reaching for the blood pressure tablets again:mad:

I have being doing lots of tracerts and i'm having the same problem with 84.116.238.22 also.If you trace or ping that IP its fine its only whe you try to go through that hop the the ping rises.
I will be in contact with them tomorrow about that issue so i will report back when i have some info.

Most of my traffic get routed through that IP which seems to be the cause of the probs there is one other IP in the UK causing the same issue also belonging to Chello Broadband. And yes from what i read also Chello is part of the UPC group.

Same problem for me; the 84.116.238.* hop is where the first spike happens:

Ran Speedtest.net now and pinging to Dublin is 10ms,London is also 10ms(usually 26ms) for some reason,Dusseldorf is 57ms,Amsterdam is 42ms,so everything seems fine, for the moment
Is everyone else back to normal?

I'm getting full speeds to dublin with a 12 ping but london is full speed and 50 ping:(
The speeds came back during the night but the same thing happened to me on sunday night and then started going downhill around 11am yesterday. So its a case of wait and see.

    PS.
i'm still routing through this hop 84.116.238.22 but its not causing issues atm.

Full speed seems to be back. Even with my router connected. Fingers crossed it stays this way.

Checked now at mid-day and its back to the same $hite,150ms ping to Dublin server,so if this is down to conjestion is there anything that I can ask UPC to do?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,459 ✭✭✭T-b0n3

    Well that didn't last long!

Mine back to bad pings. Not as bad as last night but still 100+.

    SIGH

    This is so f*cking annoying!

Only one good side to all of these is its making me less likely to game online now because its laggy, which is good because I'm meant to be studying for my 6 repeats! Doh!

Anyone actually mailed or contacted NTL directly on this? I don't have my account handy so haven't yet myself (would have to pester the house owner == hassle ;))

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,459 ✭✭✭T-b0n3

Yea a few of us have rang them, myself included (even though its a horrible experience!). Posts above include what the have said etc. Not very promising to say the least.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 36,711 CMod ✭✭✭✭pixelburp

Yeah so I saw, but did anyone profer the ammunition that it's clearly something wrong with one of their boxes in the traceroute chain? Might cut out the bullplop they're responding with...

    My speed is still CRAP!

    537358086.png
191ms Ping and less than half the speed I'm meant to be getting

  • Registered Users Posts: 65 ✭✭SaKuRa

Ok just rang UPC to report the fault, explained the speedtest.net results to Dublin, with about 25% of the expected download speeds, and 182ping,he then asked me to ping Galway server, and it showed a 10ms ping and 19.80mb download speed,he then asked me to try the Limerick server,5.50mb and 104ping.He then ran a test on the line and said there was no congection and everything was good, and that there has been no other reported faults in the area.
I asked why was there a 90ms delay in the traceroute to Austria, while pinging a Dublin server,he said that UPC hub called aorta is the fastest in the world and they route through either Austria aorta or the US aorta ,but the pings should not be this high.
He then offered to send an engineer out on Thursday to check things out, with the usual conditions of a charge if the equipment/software setup is at fault.
I mentioned about everyone else having the same problems on boards.ie across different parts of Dublin and he then summised that it may be a node problem in a Dublin exchange, and the engineer will be able to see if that is the issue.
I dont think the engineer is going to be much help, but ill post up if it is or not on Thursday night, but i would suggest everyone with a problem contact UPC so they get to register the issue,as I believe that this is happening to a lot of people, and only some people are noticing it,due to the vast majority of people not gaming/using torrents etc.

I've been noticing some strange behaviour myself the last few weeks. At times, for seemingly no reason at all, some websites that i regularly visit won't load, while others do.

Then gaming, i play FIFA most night, and like to host the games, but late;y at times they've become very laggy. And when I'm paying out over €40 for the service, you'd hope wouldn't be a problem.

They have us by the balls though don't they? There's no other alternative out there, that can match their speeds. So what can we do?

Ugh, whole thing makes me sick tbh.
